I'm released early the next morning and Eric wastes no time moving us back in. By lunchtime all of our things are back in his apartment and it's as if the last few weeks have never happened.
Hudson is still napping when I join Eric on the couch. "What do you want to do today?"
He closes the file on his lap and wraps his arm around my shoulders as I curl into his side. "We could go down to the Pit and see our friends, they're probably worried about me after what happened at the war games."
Eric shakes his head. "Let's stay here. Phase two starts tomorrow and I want us to be alone."
"I'm going to fail." I pout. After everything that happened the past few days, I completely forgot about the mental part of our training.
Eric snorts. "No you won't. You're one of the best initiates in this year's class. You'll do just fine."
"As long as you're there to get me through it." I smile.
His face falls ever so slightly. "I can't administer your simulations because we're together, it'd be a conflict of interest. One of the other trainers will be in charge of you."
"Four." I say. "I want Four to do them." Eric frowns and I laugh at his expression. "Knock it off, he's like my brother. I know that Levi will be one of my fears, I'd prefer not to have to explain that to anyone and Four already knows."
"How'd he find out?" Eric asks.
"He was going through old footage in the archive and found it." I explain.
"Fine." Eric agrees. "I'll make sure Four does your sims."
I stretch up to kiss his cheek. "Thank you."
Eric grabs my face, kissing me gently. "I love you."
"I love you too." I grin into the kiss before it begins to deepen.
He leans forward, pushing me back onto the couch. He climbs on top of me, being cautious of my still healing leg.
I place my hands on Eric's shoulders at he moves to kiss down my neck. He stops at my collar bone, gently nipping at the skin there.
I groan and reach down to grab the hem of his shirt, tugging it up his torso. I get it to his shoulders before he grabs it and removes it the rest of the way.
Our mouths connect again and our tongues fight to have the upper hand. He pulls away and grabs at my black tank top, looking into my eyes. "You're sure about this."
I think hard, asking myself if I'm ready. This will be my first time after Levi's assault. I realize that after all we've been through, after everything Eric has done for me, there's no one else I'd feel comfortable doing this with.
I pull my bottom lip between my teeth and nod. Eric helps me sit as he pulls my top easily over my head and then helps me lay back down.
He's kissing me again when we hear a cry from the other room. I can't help but laugh.
"Our boy has great timing." Eric snorts, laughing along with me as he sits up.
I reach for my shirt and pull it back on. Eric does the same and I slowly stand up from the couch.
He grabs my waist, pulling me into his side. "I'll get him. Sit down and relax." He kisses my forehead before heading down the hall toward Hudson's room.
Three high pitched beeps sound throughout the apartment and I know it's the Dauntless alert system. Max's voice echoes from the speakers.
"Attention all Dauntless members. Please report to the Pit immediately. This is mandatory." The three beeps follow the message signaling the end of the broadcast.
"Eric!" I call just as he meets me in the hall with Hudson in his arms. I can feel the panic beginning to build within my chest.
He must see it on my face because I'm wrapped in his arms a second later. "Don't worry, Ophelia. This isn't about us." He promises, pressing a kiss into the top of my head.
I nod, still unsure but force myself to wear the mask of bravery I've gotten so good at hiding behind.
"Let me grab Hudson a snack and we'll leave." I walk into the kitchen, still pretty slow on my unsteady leg and fill a bag with apple cinnamon cereal puffs.
Hudson sees them and immediately leans away from Eric's body, reaching for me.
"Oh I see how it is. Thanks a lot, Bud." Eric laughs as he passes our son over.
He places a protective arm around my shoulder and guides me toward the center of Dauntless.
When we reach the Pit, it is slammed to maximum capacity. Everyone is here, the youngest member to the oldest. No one has skipped this briefing.
Five more minutes pass before Max climbs onto the concrete platform at the head of the cavernous room.
He doesn't give any greeting, just spits out the reason for the assembly. "This morning we found the body of one of our members in a burned down warehouse outside of the compound. The body belonged to one of our leaders, James Hale."
There's a collective gasp and murmurs as our entire population is shocked. Eric and I glance at each other but play along.
Once everyone has quieted down again, Max continues. "After numerous investigations, it was ruled as an attack by the Factionless. We will continue with our normal day to day duties for the time being, but we are now on high alert. Expect a heightened armed presence in and around the compound. You are now free to leave." He finishes his speech and leaves the room as quickly as he entered.
The room is silent as everyone stands frozen in shock.
