The next morning I'm up at 4:30 getting ready for training. My eyes burn and I wipe the sleep from them as I tie my thick hair up into a high ponytail. I slip out the door, not wanting to wake Hudson or my mom, and make it to the pit by 4:50. Training starts at 5.
I munch on the protein bar I grabbed from the pantry as I wait for Len and Arri. When they arrive, they look no more awake than I feel and I know today will be rough on all of us.
Every Dauntless born is present and accounted for when Levi storms into the pit. There's no sign of Eric and I try not to get nervous. There are plenty of people around, Levi can't do anything to me.
"Alright let's get started." He shouts. "I'll be pairing you up in groups and we'll start working on fight techniques."
Levi begins to partner us up and as there are only a few of us left standing, I realize we have an odd number of Dauntless born.
"Ophelia." The sound of his voice calling my name pulls me from my thoughts. "Since there's no one for you to practice with, you'll be fighting me."
I swallow the spit in my mouth that's appeared out of nowhere and wonder where the hell Eric is.
Before I even have time to prepare for the fight, Levi throws a punch to my gut, knocking the wind out of me. As I'm hunched over trying to catch my breath, he knocks me to the ground.
"Oh my God." I hear someone shout and I know all eyes are on us.
Levi is on top of me now and I feel his hands wrap around my throat. I struggle beneath him, my entire body thrashing as his grip tightens.
"Stop!" A girl screams. It's Arri.
He doesn't let go. It anything, he squeezes harder and my vision is clouded with dark spots. I need oxygen.
"You're killing her!" This time it's Lennie begging him to stop.
I know I don't have long before I pass out and after that, it won't take much to kill me.
"What the fuck are you doing?!" I hear a male voice shout as I give up, I have no strength left to fight.
Levi is roughly removed from me and I gasp, quickly sucking in ragged breaths. Eleanor and Arri are instantly at my side, helping me sit up.
I grab my head, feeling a headache coming on as I see Levi pressed against the wall. Eric has his forearm up to his neck and is yelling.
"What the fuck was that?"
Levi can barely form words as he chokes out his response. "I was training her."
"Since when is it ok to strangle initiates?"
"She wasn't fighting back hard enough. I was motivating her." Levi sneers.
Eric presses his arm further into Levi's neck and I know he's contemplating murder. He finally thinks better of it and releases him.
Levi slides to the floor and Eric gets close, their faces inches from one another. "If you ever motivate her again, I'll end you right here."
Everything seems to move in slow motion as Levi pulls himself from the ground and Eric makes his way towards me and my friends.
"Get up." He orders. His voice is harsh and I know he's trying to hide his concern. We can't show any feelings for each other until initiation is over.
I stand slowly, shrugging off Eleanor's touch as she tries to help me. I won't let myself be seen as weak.
"You're going to the infirmary. We need to make sure your instructor didn't crush your windpipe." Eric snarls, shooting Levi a glare.
We exit the pit and I stagger slowly behind Eric, still trying to get my bearings. As soon as we're far enough away, he stops me.
"Can you breathe?" He's as close to me as physically possible.
I give a shaky nod. "Barely." My voice is raspy and my throat is raw.
"Well, can you walk?" His hand is on the small of my back.
"Not really." I answer. My entire body feels weak.
Eric scoops me up easily and cradles me into his chest.
"What are you doing?" I tense up in his arms and he snorts in amusement. "What if someone sees us?" I whisper.
"You're injured and I'm your instructor. I'm taking you to the clinic because you can barely function. I'm pretty sure this is allowed." He chuckles.
I take in a slow breath and rub my neck gently, but wince at the pain. Eric sees my discomfort and is suddenly serious. "You're already bruising. I can see that assholes handprints."
The anger in his eyes is undeniable and I try to calm him. "I'll be ok, Eric."
"I'm going to talk to Max. He needs to know what happened. Levi deserves to be punished. For everything." Eric stresses the word 'everything'.
"It won't help. Nothing will change."
"Damn it, Ophelia!" He shouts but lowers his voice when he sees the look on my face. "Sorry." He apologizes. "But there were witnesses this time. You remember the deal we made with James, if Levi did anything else to you he would be punished."
I know I won't be able to change his mind on this. Eric only wants to protect me and deep down I know Levi needs to be dealt with, even if it means the entire faction learns the truth.
"Alright." I agree and he looks shocked that I've given in so easily.
"Really?" He questions, eyebrows raised.
I stare at him and try figure out what to say. "I just don't want to argue anymore, Eric. Look where that got us last time." He looks guilty and I feel bad for bringing up the past. "I know you only want to take care of me. It's time I stand back and let you do that."
By this time, we've made it to the infirmary and as we walk through the doors Aylee glances up from the patient she's currently with.
"What happened?" She's concerned. After everything she's done for me, we've grown close.
"Training. She was strangled." Eric doesn't give any more details and Aylee knows not to ask questions.
"Ok." She nods. "I'm almost done here. Take her to a bed and I'll be there in a minute."
Eric sets me down on a bed and draws the curtain around us, grabbing my hand. He rubs his thumb gently across the back of it while we wait.
Aylee pulls back the curtain and Eric stands, quickly dropping my hand. "I have to get back. Take care of her."
"I always do." Aylee rolls her eyes as Eric passes her. He doesn't say another word to either of us as he leaves the clinic.
"Well that was uncomfortable." She says as she begins to check me out. I try to hold back my laughter, it's still too painful. "Is he ever pleasant?" Aylee asks.
"Rarely."
She looks at me with pity. "I'm sorry about the break up. It's been awhile since I've seen you and I just wanted to see how you're doing."
I try to look sad. "It's hard."
I must be convincing because she gives me a hug and then changes the subject. "Well the good news is that you didn't sustain any lasting injuries, you'll just have some nasty bruises for a few weeks. But you're free to leave whenever."
"Do you mind if I stay a little? I don't want to head back to training just yet."
"Of course not." She shakes her head. "Take as long as you need." Aylee draws the curtain back around my bed, giving me some privacy. "I'll see you later, Ophelia."
"Bye, Aylee." I smile.
