After making it off the train I head straight to my family's apartment, the compound is always a mess after the ceremony. I want to avoid the chaos of lost transfers and excited Dauntless born who try to show their superiority.
I think of Eric but know I'll see him at dinner, things will be calmer then. To pass the time I crawl into bed for a nap and drift off to thoughts of the boy who chose my faction. I can't help but hope it's because of me.
A few hours later someone is brushing the stray hairs behind my ear, waking me from my dreams. "Wake up, sweet girl."
"Momma?" I rub the sleep from my eyes and open them to see my mom sitting on the edge of my bed.
She smiles down at me and begins to scratch my back. My body relaxes further into the bed and I appreciate her presence. She's been incredibly busy since my father died, having to leave her job in intelligence and fill his spot as leader. I rarely see her and cherish the moments when I do.
"It's almost time for dinner. The leaders are introduced to the initiate class and families are expected to be present." She looks older than I remember. Worried, and stressed. Being a leader has aged her.
"I know, Mom. I've been up there every year since I was born." She places a loving hand on my cheek and I lean into her touch.
She pauses and I can tell she's choosing her next words carefully. "But this is your first time without Daddy. And Levi will also be there."
I feel my stomach turn just hearing his name. My mother and Levi's father are the only ones who know the truth. But a leader's son taking advantage of another leader's daughter is a bad look for Dauntless and it was decided that the incident would remain private.
"I know it won't be easy but I need you to be strong. Handle it with the courage and grace I know you have inside of you, and as soon as it's over you can run far away. You can deal with it on your own terms. Scream or cry, do whatever it is that you need to do to heal." She grabs my hand giving it a gentle squeeze. "I love you, Ophelia."
"I love you too, Mom." I wipe away a single tear that has found its way down my cheek. She kisses the top of my head and leaves to wait for me in the other room. With a shaky breath I get out of bed and head over to my closet. I grab a form fitting sparkly black dress, it's long sleeved and reaches the middle of my thighs. Curling my long hair, I leave it hanging in dark red waves down my back and start my make-up.
When I'm finished I meet my mom in the living room. She looks up when she hears my heels cross the hardwood floor. "You look beautiful, baby."
"Thanks, Momma." I sit next to her on the couch and lean my body into hers.
She places he hand against my stomach and I fight back tears. "How am I going to do this? I'm not ready."
"I wasn't ready for your brother but it all worked out." I think of Jagger, my older brother who defected to Candor last year and smile. I miss him but know he's happier away from Dauntless.
"Yea, but you had Dad to help you." I try to pull myself together. There's no point panicking now, I still have several months before the baby is even born.
"I did." She nods. "But you have me. We'll just go with it, take it all one day at a time. But I promise you will not have to do this alone, Ophelia."
Her words calm me and I wrap my arms around her. "Thanks, Mom."
She hugs me back and then pulls us up from the couch. "You ready to face this?"
I stand up straighter, shoulders back with my head held high. "Yea."
"That's my girl." We leave our apartment and take the stairs down deeper into the heart of the compound. When we reach the ground level, gone is my gentle, soft spoken mother and in her place is Kenna, the Dauntless leader.
The cafeteria is buzzing with life. People talk over one another as they shovel down food. It's difficult to hear your own thoughts. We climb the stairs to reach the balcony that overlooks the entire room.
Max is there. Followed by Veronica. Then James, his wife Alexandra, Levi, and his brother Jackson. Next is my mother and I. And finally Liam and his wife Eden.
I stand tall and proud with my chin held high, like I'm above all this. I look around for Eric, but can't find him in the mess of black clothing.
Max addresses the room, instantly silencing the faction. "Initiates, stand."
The 35 initiates in this year's class rise from their seats and he starts the same speech he's made for as long as I can remember. "You have chosen to join the warrior faction tasked with the defense of this city and all its inhabitants. We believe in ordinary acts of bravery and the courage that causes one person to stand up for another. Remember that. Do us proud."
All of Dauntless is on its feet cheering and calling out. The members rough house with one another and bang their cups and silverware on the tables. We truly are a wild bunch.
I can feel Levi's glare from a mile away and I risk a glance in his direction, he's looking at me like I'm a meal. I subconsciously cradle my stomach, protecting my unborn son or daughter from their malicious father.
Max raises a hand and quiets the room once more. "These are your leaders and their families. Respect them and their authority." He then heads down the stairs to the main level of the cafeteria, releasing everyone to enjoy the rest of their evening.
I shoot my mom a look and she gives a quick nod, allowing my escape. I turn for the stairs before anyone can stop me. I push through my faction members and head straight for the door.
Once I'm outside I slip off my heels and take off for the chasm. When I reach the rocky cliffs I sit down, my back leaning against the railing.
The tears come uninvited and sobs wrack my entire body. I feel nauseous and I want to hit something or someone. That's when I notice black pants tucked into combat boots.
My eyes travel further up the body of the person who's followed me, they're wearing a vest over a tight black T-shirt. I reach their face and see that pointed nose, grey eyes, and blonde hair. It's Eric.
