Rachel's car parked in front of the home they had abandoned fourteen years ago, next to her was her sixteen year old son with his earphones popped in and his head slowly moving to the rhythm of the beat, "so, what do you think" said Rachel trying to engage with her son, "it's okay" answered Xavier, "this was the last place I thought I'd ever come back to in my life" said the cop as she looked upon the house with hope for a new beginning but a deep pain hunting her from the past, "this is it, our freh start" said Rachel as she smiled at her son who politely smiled back, "you ready for your new job, Sheriff" asked the e teenage boy trying to console his mother, "I guess so" she answered, "I'm a bit nervous" she added, "well you don't need to be, you'll be amazing" Xavier said as they exited the car and rushed inside the house while the day was overcome with rain,
Xavier walked upstairs to settle in to his new home while his mother prepared dinner in the kitchen downstairs, he passed a set of family pictures hanged on the side of the staircase leaning on the wall, pictures of his mother and late father having a good time, a few family pictures with two year old Xavier and the rest were pictures of the three together, Xavier didn't remember his father as much since he died when he was two years old so the pictures didn't bring a lot of emotion,
He arrived at the second floor of the house and made his way to the room he assumed was his, it had plain walls, a white door and windows closed shut, in the corner of the spacious room was a nicely made bed and a closet next by the corner next to the window,
He placed his bags on his bed and walked towards the window and opened it to see the residents of Pine Falls going on with their daily routines, some coming back from work, some walking their dogs even though it's raining and others just driving and walking around, he looked at the neighborhood filled with houses, the town that was close by, the police station near the town's landmark, The Pine Falls Forest at the far end of the town,
Xavier attempted to shut the window closed but before he could, he heard what seemed to be a loud wolf howl coming from the forest, the howl was so loud that it could've woken up a person in a deep sleep, he left the window open and walked down the staircase to the kitchen with his mom preparing a meal,
"hey mom, since when does Pine Falls have Wolves" the boy asked as he leaned on the wall of the entrance to the kitchen, "wolves? I don't recall the town ever having wolves, where'd you get that idea" said the officer, "well didn't you hear the loud wolf howl just now?" the boy asked, "no, I didn't hear any wolf howl, and even if there was, the wolves would have to be in the forest and that is too far to hear" said Rachel, "huh, you sure there aren't any wolves" Xavier asked with confusion, "no, the only wild animals in the forest are skunks and badgers, deers maybe but no wolves" said Rachel, "okay, I'll go get ready for dinner" the teenage boy said and walked back upstairs,
How was it possible that a howl so loud it almost made Xavier's ear ring was only heard by him.
