Featherington House
Pen is pacing still not over last night's disaster. It is almost time for sleep. But she stays wide awake. She hears a soft knocking. She opens it find a post boy.
"This is for you Miss." he says handing a letter to her.
"Mail? This late?" She wonders.
"They gave me some money. It was awfully kind of them." he tells her while walking away.
She closes the door and opens it immediately.
Things she noticed:
1. Bridgerton wax seal
2. Addressed to Pen
3. From Eloise
4. Not Eloise's writing
She reads it over, noticing that penmanship obviously belongs to a Mr. Colin Bridgerton. A Mr. Bridgerton who inform hers they must meet and fast at that. He then tells her where to go which is of course Chapling clearing. Does he think her a fool? And why would he ask her to come meet him in the middle of the night. Does he not now that it rained last night and it will once more rain tonight. She starts to see that maybe Colin is more idiotic then she gave him credit for. Maybe he wants to reconcile. He might want to become her mentor once more. Who is the bigger fool, Colin or her. She thinks as she escapes through the gates in her night dress and parasol in hand.
Chapling Clearing
"Hello Colin." He hears.
He turns around and faces Pen.
"Oh, so the trick worked?" He says excitedly
"It did not work. I knew it was you by your penmanship. It was a dead give away especially since we were once close penpals." She says, rolling her eyes in his stupidity.
"Why did you agree to come then?" he questions
"Because I wanted to see what this was all about."
"Right. Well" Putting his hands together.
"Before you start. May we find a cover. It is going to rain soon. I felt the droplets on my face while walking."
He should've known it was going to rain. He truly is messing up left and right already.
"Oh, um. Yes."
"I know the perfect place, come" she beckons.
They walk for a little while they then reach their destination.
"Should we be going in there? It looks like an abandoned garden shed."
"Me and El use to hide in here whenever we would have serious chats. You never know whose listening." she says while opening the creaky door.
As they get comfortable sitting down with pillows he pinpoints are from home, he notices her expectant eyes.
He clear his throat, "Right. Well. Um, I."
Goodness, he can't think straight. His head feels all mushy. What if he messes up again?
He finally grows the courage and blurts out, "I want to help you again but under my rules. Not yours. I want you to find a love match. Someone that respects and loves you. Not someone that will dishonor you the moment you put the ring on."
She stares, a bit surprised by the outburst and then she nods.
"That is the honorable thing to do. I respect your conditions and accept them."
He can't believe it. She just agreed to let him help her.
"When do we start?" she asks.
They both hear the rainfall harder and harder and then they hear thunder clap.
"Right now, I suppose." he says with a big grin.
Morning
They both awake because of the sun that his glaring them in the face through the shed door. Both groggy Mentor and student pay no attention to how they are cuddled to one another. Until of course they both look at each other and notice their entanglement.
"Oh, well. That was a strange way to awake." Colin says rubbing the back of his neck as a soft blush falls upon his cheeks.
Penelope suddenly looks alarmed.
"What time is it?" She asks.
Colin pulls out his pocket watch and gives it to her.
"That was a close one. Varley doesn't come to awake me until 8. I must hurry. I will meet you again for another lesson, soon?" She says relieved.
"Yes. Be ready for a little adventure today. Tell your mama you're out with Eloise Bridgerton. Meet me here. Noontime."
Penelope nods and goes on her merry way. Colin can't believe his luck. Not only did he teach her last night how important self-respect was in a marriage. But he also taught her the key to finding a love match was confidence and self-love. Basically teaching her there is no better way to make a man fall in love then by being yourself in front of him. He is feeling mighty confident in his teaching skills this lovely morn.
