"Ain't no hood like Motherhood"

Dawn

~Michael~

The plane took off about five minutes ago, and I could already feel the pressure building in my ears. My least favorite part of flying.

Destiny sat in the seat next to me with her head softly laid on my shoulder. She had my robe over her acting as a blanket, since the plane did always have the air conditioning on full blast.

As I looked at her, I remember the surprise that I was supposed to give her.

I slowly lifted her head off my shoulder so I could stand up. She didn't wake up, even slightly.

I walked to the front of the cabin and took my phone off of airplane mode. I waited to see if we flew close enough to a cell tower so I could get a signal. Once I did. I dialed my mother's number.

It rang a few times before she picked up. I knew she'd be awake at this time.

"It's always nice getting a call from you." She said as soon as she answered.

I chuckled. "That's your greeting to me?"

"Yes. Because sometimes when I don't hear from you for a while I start to think the worst."

"You know I'm always staying safe, Mom."

She sighed. "That's what you always tell me."

"Anyway," I said to redirect the conversation. "I was calling to ask if it's okay for me to stop by in about two or three hours."

"You know you're always welcome in this house!"

"But that's not all. There's someone I want you to meet."

She seemed intrigued by this. "Who is this someone?"

I glanced over at Destiny who remained asleep in her seat.

"A girlfriend?" She asked.

"I- well... something of that sort." I answered.

"You better not be going around breaking any young girl's heart."

I completed half an eye roll before catching myself. I always tried to stay the most respectful when it came to my mother.

"I promise I'm not." I said.

"Alright then. Well you can bring her on over."

I smiled. "Alright. I think you'll like her."

"I sure hope I do." She said with a light laugh. "She better not be anything like the last one."

I inhaled deeply. "We'll make that judgment together."
I said. My signal connection was starting to weaken as we began flying over the ocean.

"My signal is going to disconnect. I'll see you later, Ma."

"Alright baby, be safe."
