Title: What We Could Be
Warnings: None

—————

Stefon picks up his daughter's plate and grins when he sees that only crumbs and smeared ketchup are left. She's growing up so fast. The little things reveal that every day.

Being a father put you right in the middle of wanting to watch your child grow up but also wanting to keep them young forever. Everyone has to let go eventually. He doesn't worry too much about having to let go; she's been attached to him since the day she was born and she had promised countless times that he would be her best friend forever.

Having her call him Dad was one thing, but Best Friend hit different. It made him feel special and by the way she looked at him every time she said it, that was exactly what she wanted him to feel.

Today way no different.

She slides out of her seat and hurries to the bathroom to wash her hands and face. Her dad is lounging on the couch when she comes back, his eyes blankly staring at the commercial flashing across the tv screen. That's boring, she thinks as she makes her way over to him.

"What should we do today, best friend?" She ask, jumping up onto the couch and scooting across the cushion until her side is flush against his.

He looks down at her. "We could watch football?"

She shakes her head.

"Bake some cookies?"

She thinks for a moment before shaking her head again.

"Play with your Barbies?"

"What is (Y/n) doing right now?"

Stefon mentally curses. That was the one question he had been praying she wouldn't ask. Not that he didn't want you to be involved. Things are just complicated. Emotions are complicated.

He quickly shrugs, looking everywhere but her. "I don't know, but she's probably very busy. She isn't always available like you wish she was."

Nova stands up in a flash, her small hands falling onto her hips. "She always has time for me," she replies in a know-it-all tone. Her index finger comes up and pokes him right in the chest. "And you. We're her favorite people. She told me herself."

He stares wide-eyed at the six year old for a moment, attempting to decipher her choice of words and the way she spoke them. And you. Did she know something he didn't? Narrowing his eyes in deep thought, he switches it up on her and wisely chooses to play dumb.

"Oh did she now?"

One of her hands tightly grips at each of his shoulders and with all her strength, she gives him a good shake. "Call her and ask! She'll tell you!"

He puts his hands over hers and murmurs 'okay, okay' before pulling out his phone. She stares at the bright screen with a big smile as he presses your name and the device starts to ring.

It rings and rings but Nova's smile never falters. He shares a sympathetic look with her, one she bats down with a wave of her hand.
