"You Know, This Isn't What I Expected."
-----
Kameron And I Laid In Bed Making Out. Every Second We Stopped To Breath I Smiled.Kissing Him Gave Me Butterflies, And Right Now, They Were Swarming.
"I Love You Girl." Kameron Said, Kissing Me Once More.
I Ran My Finger Across His Cheek, "I Love You Too."
My Cell Phone Rang And I Reached Over To The Night Stand And Grabbed It.
"Hello?"
It Was My Mother's Nurse, "Ms. Gray, It's Dana, Something's Happened."
I Sat Up In The Bed, "What Happened? Is She Okay?"
Before The Nurse Hung Up, She Said. "Please Hurry Here."
I Looked Over At Kameron With Such Troubled Eyes. "It's My Mother."
I Jumped Up And Dressed As Fast As I Possibly Could And Grabbed My Car Keys.
On The Way To The Hospital I Kept Thinking About What Would Happen To Me If My Mother Passed.
What Would Be The Meaning Of Moving If She Had Died On Me Anyways.
Kameron Placed His Hand On My Thigh, "Just Breathe Bonnie."
I Looked Over At Him Quickly Before Looking Back At The Road.
A Few Minutes Later We Pulled Into The Care Center Parking Lot And I Wasted No Time Rushing In.
The Receptionist Looked At Me Then Looked Back At Her Computer.
"Excuse Me," I Said Slamming My Hand On The Counter. "Your Being Really Rude Right Now."
She Rolled Her Eyes And Looked Up With A Fake Smile. "Yes, May I Help You?"
I Looked At Her Long And Hard Before I Took The Clipboard And Threw It At Her Face.
"Don't Fucking Play With Me This Morning, I'm Not--
Kameron Grabbed My Waist And Pulled Me From The Desk. "Bonnie, Come On."
I Pushed Him Away From Me And Fixed My Clothes, Starting Down The Hall To Find My Mother's Room.
The Door Was Open And The Light Was On But She Wasn't There.
I Turned Around And Was Met Face To Face With A Nurse. "Are You Dana's Daughter?"
I Nodded, "Where Is She?"
"We Raced Her To Surgery To Get The Fluid From Her Lungs," She Said Being Interrupted By Her Pager. "Here's An Update."
I Looked At Her Anxiously, "Is She Okay?"
She Looked Up From Her Pager. "Head To Room 429 To See For Yourself."
I Grabbed Kameron's Hand And We Headed To Room 429. When I Found It, I Couldn't Bring Myself To Go Inside.
"I'll Let You Speak To Her Alone." Kameron Offered, Opening The Door For Me.
I Grabbed His Hand, "I Want You To Come With Me. I Want Her To Know You're Alive."
We Both Walked Inside The Room Together. My Mother, She Was Sleeping, Peacefully I Suppose.
I Wanted Her To Be Peaceful, But Her Face, It Showed Something Very Different.
Kameron Pulled A Chair For Me To Sit Down, And After I Did, I Grabbed His Hand.
I Cried. Just Seeing My Mothers Pained Face Made Me Cry, But When She Awoke, A Part Of Me Was Relieved.
"You Know, This Wasn't What I Expected." Kameron Spoke, Towards My Mother.
She Eyed Kameron For A Long Time. "I Always Knew You Weren't Dead."
I Turned To Look At Her, "What Do You Mean?"
"Exactly What I Said Little Girl." She Said, Her Voice Raspy. "Your Glowing Child."
I Glanced At Kameron Smiling Before Looking Back At My Mother. "He Makes Me Happy."
She Waved Her Hand At Me. "You Don't Know Yet, Do You?"
I Looked At Her Confused. "Know What Yet?"
She Smiled Innocently, "Nothing. Kameron, How Have You Been?"
Kameron Stepped Up And Kissed My Mother. "Good Mrs. Gray, Thanks For Asking."
"You Know It's Ms. Gray Now Son, Alot Has Changed Since You Left."
"Mother," I Interrupted, "I Found An Old Picture Of Us."
I Pulled The Old Photo Out Of My Purse And Handed It To My Mother.
I Watched As She Viewed It With A Smile, "It Was The Day I Did Your Makeup And Painted Those Whiskers On Our Face."
My Mother Nodded, A Tear Falling From Her Eyes. "This Was On My Birthday."
Now That I Remember, It Was. Then It All Started Dawning On Me. My Mother Was Dying.
"Mama, You Can't Leave Me." I Said, Grown Women Or Not, This Was My Mother.
"Bonnie," She Said, Placing The Picture Back In My Hand. "Everyone Has Their Day, And I Fear Mine Is Near But Bonnie I'm Gonna Always Be Here With You. I Want You To Promise Me, That You & That Very Man Are Going To Start A Family Together Because Bonnie You Make Him Happy. I Can See It On His Face. Don't Worry About Me Darling, I'm Going Home."
She Turned To Kameron. "And You, You Make My Daughter Happy And Continue To Love Her. Keep Her Safe For Me Kameron. Bonnie Wipe Your Tears And You Both Come Give Me A Hug."
I Wiped My Face And Hugged My Mother, Along With Kameron.
The Rest Of The Day, We Stayed With My Mother, Talking, Joking Around, Catching Up.
