Nevermore is not the only school for outcast. Just the closest one in the region. Due to Weems obsessive attempts at making the outcasts feel not alone, she had reached out to other schools to plan an event.
A tournament weekend against a school of Ocean Sirens called "Salt's Cry", a elite vampire academy called "Eternal" and a very loose open wilderness therapy school for all called the "Sun's Children".
As If I didn't have to deal with enough students to dislike at Nevermore. A week had passed since Enid became a Nightshade. Though she vowed to keep it a secret, she told me and Thing everything. It was her way of an outlet that wasn't her blog. I had to spend many morning listening to weird initiations, nighttime swims, parties, and other uninteresting events.
"I'll finally be allowed to participate in fencing class. It's been torture to sit there and watch. The coach sees it as an invitation to have a conversation with me," I said as I pulled on my school uniform.
Enid laughed, "such torture." She reached for the door and let out a cry of pain.
I ran out of the closet. "What is it?"
Her face was contorted in pain as she raised her palm. There was a burning circle on it, "someone replaced the doorknobs with silver ones."
I inspected it. She was correct. I opened the door. "Don't tell anyone about this."
Enid frowned, "What do you mean? Someone is messing with me?"
"I highly doubt it's targeted at you. No one has beef against you," I pointed out. "We can't react or they win."
She shook her hand. "I'd better not get picked on more because of you." She stormed off, cradling her hand against her body.
Principal Weems floated through the wall. "I found you a psychologist!" Great. " they've agreed to come down in two weeks to do your evaluation." After announcing that, she floated upwards. If I was a ghost, I'd avoid everyone and live contently.
When I finally got to Fencing class, I was the closest I could get to joyous as a I dressed out. The saber felt great in my hands. Time to wreak some havoc.
"Us first." Bianca reminded me.
The class ignored their own training and circles around us. "En guarde!" The Coach Vlad exclaimed.
I moved fast, not waiting to give Bianca a second. I twirled back, my footwork in a dance. Parry, deflect, lunge, dodge, feign, attack. I flipped back, narrowly avoiding her blade. I hit her first.
We started again. This one lasted longer. The room was silent except four our labored breath and grunts. I glared at her from behind the mask, trying to get her up against the wall. We were inches apart, our swords in the air. Bianca moved her foot forward brushing her leg against mine.
It sent me into a vision.
Bianca was screaming but no sound came from her. She clawed at her throat and stumbled. A chalice slipped from her hands. I could smell the vinegar scent coming from it.
I snapped back. Bianca's sword was against my chest. "That's hardly fair," Xavier raised an eyebrow. "She was sent into a vision mid point."
"I don't let my powers get in the way of my match. She should have better control," Bianca argued. Coach Vlad nodded towards Bianca.
I got back into to ready position. This was shaping out to be very similar to our last duel. "Don't you want to know what I saw about you?"
My feet took over and we began to circle, "What happens to a siren when she looses her voice? Becomes obsolete." That distracted her and I went in for the kill. I won. If she wanted to play dirty, I'd win at her own game every single time.
"What did you see?" Bianca asked, pulling off her mask. She didn't even seem to care about losing. "I can't just lose my voice. You'd better no be lying about what you saw."
I pulled off my own mask, " Don't go excepting stranger's drinks."
Xavier stood up, ready to approach me for a duel. Instead I turned to Ajax. "Time to see what you've learned."
Out of class, Marcus chased me down. "Hey freak! Did you put that holy water in our showers!" He came up from behind and grabbed my shoulder, shoving me into the stone wall.
I grabbed his wrist and twisted him until I had him against the wall. "I told you not to touch me." I kneed his legs and he crumpled. "And no, I don't have the capacity to bless water anyways."
"It took out Thomas and almost got me," he snarled, his fangs out.
Xavier scoffed, "what part of no did you not hear. She didn't do it."
"I didn't ask you," he seethed. "She could stab you in the back and you'd still be chasing her around like a blind puppy." Xavier shut his mouth. What could he say? That had actually already happened.
I let go of Marcus, "Don't be surprised that you aren't loved here. Spread rumors about me all you want. I don't care. Nor do I have the time for pranks."
"That's hardly a prank," Bianca spoke up. "You could actually kill one of them." She put her hands in her throat, still probably thinking about my vision.
I rolled my eyes, "Well I've already told you the truth. So get out of my eyesight." I had a plant class to get to.
I sped up to separate myself from the group. I needed a second to speak with my aunt. She was deep in the plants. Her hair was pulled into a messy bun and she was wearing pastel overalls. Enid would love her.
I pulled out my arm, "Read me."
She looked up from the dirt she was digging around in. "You want me to have a vision about you? It's very invasive."
What she didn't know was I had been reading Goody's book. It had a lengthy section of visions and how to combat someone who could just sift through your head. I wished to try it out.
Ophelia wiped the mud off her hand and placed her hand on my wrist. Her eyes turned white. My head flew back. I was in total darkness. And yet I could feel her presence working deeper into my head.
I conjured up a memory to trap her. It was just a test I had taken in regular school. Math. The most boring thing I could think off. It was like I was there. I could feel Ophelia looking through my eyes.
I'm not done yet
She seemed to speak as if a thought in my own head.
What's this?
The memory faltered. The test slipped away, a transparent filter over something she was trying to pull up. Sitting below me was Tyler in chairs. This was when I was going to torture the truth out of him.
I pulled back. But this time, I didn't have a clear memory to pull on. I slipped into an abyss.
