By the time we were back to school, the night was upon us. I dragged Tyler to the bee shack conveniently as he woke up.
I sat across him, "Tell me the truth, does this medication keep the Hyde away?"
"They call them my antidepressants," he laughed emptily.
I pulled out a few tablets, "I won't make you go back if you take these."
"They aren't full proof,"He answered transparently as he swallowed them. "I don't want you to go."
I stood up, "I have to ease everyone's suspicion. I'm a missing person. They will be looking for me."
He looked at the door, "My dad is here, isn't he?"
I nodded before leaving. What was I supposed to do now? There was still many puzzle pieces. At least I had a monster in my back pocket.
The group escorted me into the building. Enid's gaze climbed around my body. I was still in the crazy people outfit, but she could see the bruises all around me. "Students are supposed to be in their dorms-" Weems started as she reached the top of the stairs.
She stopped when she saw us, "Wednesday! You are alive!" She floated down the staircase, "What happened? How'd you get back?"
The sheriff appeared at the top of the stairs. He pulled a phone from his ear, "The institution was bombed today. Several prisoners escaped. Many are unaccounted for. And someone let out Tyler." He met my gaze. "Do you know where my son is?"
"Laurel Gates brought me there to help her get Tyler out. She wanted to use him again. She didn't succeed. Then they came and saved me from her," I have as an answer instead.
The sheriff stormed down the stair case, "Miss Addams, this is not a game. You don't know what you are doing. My son is not stable." He glowered above me. I felt the tug in my gut. The one to summon Tyler. It whispered to me. I could have him ripping into here and protecting me. He'd kill his father for me. He'd kill anyone.
I stepped back, "I told you everything". I lied.
"So it was Laurel who tampered with the games, then?" Weems interrupted.
I shook my head, "No, it's a shapeshifter. Know anything about it?"
Principal Weems is a ghost and yet she seemed to go a shade paler. "I don't know what you are talking about."
I stumbled. "I'll uncover your lie when I'm feeling farther away from death's door."
Enid wrapped an arm around me and helped me to the infirmary. "Go to bed, Enid. I'll talk to you in the morning," I sent her off. The nurse put a salve up and down my arms and across my body before wrapping my chest with bandages and putting me in a black hospital gown. I was supposed to stay there that night. She would check up on me in the morning.
Thing nestled in the blanket, keeping his pinkie finger on me. The other beds were taken up too. Injured students from the games and the judges, who had been staff members. I plaid against the pillow and crossed my eyes. Silence at last.
"Why'd you do it?" Xavier pulled me out of my promising sleep.
I cracked an eye open, "I'm a sleep."
"Why'd you bring Tyler back?" He asked. Xavier stood at the foot of my bed. He looked every in the pale lighting.
I sat up, "Come here before you wake up the others." He moved to the side and sat down on the edge of the mattress. "Tyler killed who Laurel asked him to. He was forced to and then he enjoyed it eventually. But maybe he didn't."
"He confessed that he liked it," Xavier threw his hands up.
I put my hand up, "The master and the Hyde's conscious intermingle. It becomes unclear and foggy. Maybe it was Laurel's desire that he felt. And even further, he said he doesn't have a taste for it anymore."
"And you just believed him," Xavier asked skeptically.
No, I hadn't. So why was I defending that point now? "I'm a big proponent of killing. But victims matter to me. And Tyler didn't choose to attack Eugene. So maybe if he needs to kill, he can take out people like Laurel or real criminals."
Xavier scratched his head, "I've never considered your reasoning to be round-a-bout until now. Maybe you just need to get some sleep." He excused himself and disappeared into the shadows. Was my reasoning round-a-bout?
I got up. Thing was too sound asleep to notice. The window at the end of the infirmary was open. I passed the beds. The curtains pulled over helped me to easily sneak by anyone who might not be fully asleep.
I crawled out of the window. My feet sunk into the cold grass. The exhaustion had taken its toll because I hadn't considered how much my feet would hurt to cross the gravel and dirt to get to the bee hut.
A little light was on inside. I took a deep breath and opened it. Tyler hadn't run away. He was fiddling with the bee smoker. "Your back?" He looked up and smiled. It was the little awkward smile he gave me when he was up to following along with my shenanigans.
"You know. I never have given you kudos for pulling one over me. You went as far as to scratch your own chest," I said as I moved stuff off the table and reached for Folkner's journal.
He grabbed a stool and joined me. "I thought my line 'How does it feel....to lose' was especially theatric."
I flipped through the pages. "You toyed with my emotions well. Showed me I was a fool to have such a weakness."
Tyler paused for a moment, "I don't know who I am Wednesday. This is the first time I'm not taking orders. Laurel did task me with protecting you and keeping an eye on you, but I could have done that from a distance."
"What would have happened if I had gotten in your car at the fair and let you drive me to the train station that night?" I asked instead of addressing what he was saying.
He thought about the answer, "I would have gotten on the train with you and try to debate going back until one of us was convinced of the others plans."
"Running away would have solved a lot of our problems," I sighed and scooped up the books. "But you were never going to run away with me, Tyler."
