Author's POV:

You looked at your family photo, sighing a little. A feeling of sadness engulfed you as you remembered all the moments you had spent before.

All those good ones and the bad ones. You really wished to see them again. Your family. Your parents.

But you didn't know how to. You had seen your parents in these 5 months often but you never knew how to talk properly to them. Or at least, your father.

Your relationship with him had changed completely. You sighed, blinking away the tears in your eyes.

———

"You have to perform this surgery today. Good luck." Taehyung's senior said making him nod.
"Right..." He said, trying not to sound nervous. He was, in fact, very nervous. He hadn't done surgery in so long. He was scared to mess up.
"You can do it, come on. Fighting!" His senior patted his back and left.
"I hope he's right," Taehyung whispered and walked towards the surgery room.

Hygiene, mental and physical fitness, determination, confidence.

He made sure all these were perfectly organized before he entered the room. He stared at the patient. The woman had trusted him with her life. She was a patient with heart problems. And to live, she had to get surgery. And she trusted him with it.

He had to keep that trust, right?

He took the scalpel from the assistant beside him and closed his eyes, mentally praying. This was his job, the job that he loved and wished to excel at. A job where he had to excel in order to not only sustain himself but other people as well.

—Time skip

Taehyung was determined. He tried his best.

But sometimes, times were tough.

The woman passed away in the middle of the surgery and Taehyung, even after trying his best, couldn't save her.

Being a doctor not always meant keeping people's hopes alive. Sometimes, without your wish, you crushed them and yourself too.

Taehyung went out of the room and apologized deeply to the woman's family. Her sons were crying hard, and one of them almost hit Taehyung in anger. He didn't say anything. He held it in, staring at the floor, fighting his own tears.
His heart ripped apart.
He felt useless for a moment.

He really tried to keep up that trust.

The woman smiled at Taehyung and whispered, "I trust you. But... if anything happens, I hope you tell my sons I told them to live well, smile more... eat more and remember me often, yeah?"
Taehyung remembered her words and wanted to say that to the sons but couldn't bring himself to it. He felt ashamed and guilty. Though he had no say in this game of life and death, he couldn't help but feel responsible.

Upon entering his cabin, he sat on his chair, letting his head rest on the headboard. His eyes shut as his throat worked for a few seconds, tears spilling from his eyes.
He felt as if he had killed the woman. As if he could have done better. Maybe, if he had done it in a different way if he moved the scalpel like that instead of —

Yet, the end already happened. Didn't it?

—Next day

Taehyung couldn't sleep the whole night. He kept wondering how he could've done it, how the sons were crying and how disappointed he felt.
There wasn't anything you could do for the dead other than praying. So he prayed. All the time he sat there, he mentally prayed for the woman's welfare. He cried.
Because he felt responsible.
