The ship wasn't as big as the main base once we actually got there. It had about six levels, and exceedingly long hallways. Seemed unnecessary for the seven heat signatures we picked up from here. We stopped at the safe base and then left individually, sneaking in through a side door that was way too easy to hack. At least, for Ulaz. I wasn't very good at hacking things.
He walked just a step ahead of me, looking around. It was like he was waiting for the security system to pick him up, and for the people on here to come to him. Within five minutes of walking, a boy about my age dressed in blue showed up fifty feet behind us with a rifle in hand.
"Stay close, avoid his fire and only aim to disarm."
I didn't respond, I didn't need to. Ulaz took off first, taking most of the fire. I slipped past while the boy was distracted trying to aim for the much larger, quicker soldier bouncing around. As I ran past him, I took a side glance into his helmet. He was human.
A smaller, green armoured boy came next. He pulled out his weapon and fired. I ducked and Ulaz caught the end of the rope, adjusting it in his grip, he took off running, dragging him along.
I held back a laugh as he yelled profanities, some other person screaming over the intercom telling us everything that was happening as it happened, as if there was a blind person up there with him.
We passed a hall with a bigger man dressed in yellow, who fired after we passed, and the overhead screamed, "Hunk failed the team, guys."
Hunk. Where have I heard that name before?
The next was a boy in red, holding a sword. He came for Ulaz but missed as we cut a quick corner, the green one wailing behind eventually pulled himself together and managed to pull back enough on the line to stop Ulaz in his tracks. The red jumped, kicking off the wall to come down on Ulaz from above. Ulaz grabbed the handle of his sword, holding it out just enough to block the boy's blade, still holding on to the green's line with his other hand.
I went to attack, but Ulaz held out his hand, disarming Keith in one swift movement. He yanked on the green's line, sending the smaller boy right into the red's body as he tried to come back to fight without a weapon. Red was grunting, he sprung up and launched towards Ulaz again empty handed.
Humans, resilient.
I stepped up again, and this time Ulaz let me. I grinned behind the mask and took the boy by the arm, using his running momentum against him, I swung him off his feet and back towards the blue and yellow running up from behind us. He rolled, knocking them off their feet like a bowling ball.
When I turned back around, Ulaz had a glowing metal hand at his throat, his sword unleashed to a man dressed in black, without his helmet on.
There was a moment of tension, and then Ulaz stepped back and dropped his sword to his side, pulling his hood down.
"Ulaz?" The human spoke, and my eyes widened.
It was him! We found him! Well... Ulaz, found him. Whatever. Same thing.
I stumbled as a woman came up behind and grabbed my arm, ramming me against the wall and using her other hand to press Ulaz back too. Jesus, she was strong. I looked up at her eyes, my hood had fallen. She had markings that proved she was Altean. She must be the only one left.
"Who are you?!" She yelled.
"Stop!" Shiro ordered, "He's the Galra that set me free."
"And the girl?!"
"A scout." Ulaz answered, "Her name is Vrokta. She's with me."
The Altean narrowed her eyes. She didn't seem impressed, nor did she seem to really care even though she asked. She didn't introduce herself, either. She cuffed us and we were escorted to a room and sat down in front of them all for some kind of interrogation."I don't think this is necessary." Shiro began first.
"I will not have some quiznacking Galra soldier on the bridge of my ship!" The woman hissed back.
"If I wanted to kill you, you'd be dead already." Ulaz noted aloud. He wasn't bothering with the restraints, but I was. Fiddling with a pick right in front of everyone was risky, but luckily everyone was way more afraid of Ulaz than they were of me.
I'd get my hands first, swoop down and do my ankles, and then bamb! What are they gonna do? Cuff me again?
"Are your Galra threats supposed to win my trust?"
"I'm not trying to win your trust. I'm trying to win a war." Ulaz retorted, "And because of Shiro, we are closer than we've ever been. Our gamble on you paid off better than we could have ever imagined."
"When you released me, you mentioned there were others working with you." Shiro recalled.
"Yes, we are called the Blade of Marmora."
"Uh... others? Are they here?" Hunk asked.
"Hunk, can you try not to act so scared in front of our chained up prisoners?" The blue asked, "It makes us seem a little lame."
"Myself and Vrokta are alone on this base."
"What is this base you're talking about?" The woman snapped, "Shiro's coordinates just led us to this wasteland."
I smirked, "Wow, I thought the Alteans were a species with creative minds. Guess that died out."
"Vrokta."
I rolled my eyes.
"The base is hidden." Ulaz continued, "Now that I know that it is Shiro who has come, you are welcome at this outpost. It lies dead ahead."
"Behind all the Xanthorium clusters?" Green asked.
"No. Right in front of it, in a hidden pocket of space-time."
I tilted my head as I eyed the green one. He was small, seemed younger than the others. Glasses too big for his face, small nose, wide, honey brown eyes. He looked... really familiar.
Kate?
My eyes widened, and I quickly looked away before anyone noticed my odd expression. It's not her. It can't be her, that would be ridiculous. I'm just... I just need to stop thinking of her. I think about her every day, and it's ruining me. Now I'm seeing her face in other people.
"Just fly straight for the Xanthorium cluster. You will see." Ulaz insisted.
"You think you're going to get me to destroy our ship just because you say so?"
I scowled, moving my gaze back to the woman in front, eyes still hard. She hated us more than I've ever seen any being whose been given kindness from one of our soldiers show discomfort around our looks. Part of training was understanding that most species held a fear of the Galra, so we had to be careful who we showed our face to. But this... we didn't hurt anyone, and Ulaz saved her friend's life... and she still won't even bother to give us a chance.
"We came out here to find some answers. Are we going to turn back now?" Shiro asked.
"You know I trust you, Shiro." Red spoke, "But this doesn't feel right."
"You know I hate to agree with Keith, but it's a big fat ditto for me." The blue agreed.
"Galra could have implanted fake memories of the escape in your head." Green suggested.
Hunk stepped up, "Oh come on! That would be evil- which... of course, they are."
"We aren't evil!" I snapped, earning another glare from Ulaz. I slumped my shoulders, glaring at the ground, "This is stupid. Why would we lead you into something that'll kill us too?"
"Ulaz freed me. Without him we wouldn't be here." Shiro's voice was firm, he was angry.
Welcome to the club, Shiro.
"Fine." The woman sighed, shutting her eyes as she decided to listen and turned to the ceiling, "Slow and steady Coran, into the Xanthorium cluster."
"Yes Princess." The man answered. Princess? Princess of what? "Impact imminent. In five, four, three... two!"
I waited. He didn't say one. Instead, he sent a video of what he was seeing, the running colours of space time circling around the ship. The universe was guiding us to the safe base.
"Amazing." Green breathed, "They're folding space!"
"It's like a space Taco. Or a space Calzone. Or a space soup dumpling and we're the soup!" Hunk exasperated, and I stared, wondering if he was alright.
"Welcome to the Blade of Marmora, Communications base, Thaldycon." Ulaz stood, "Now, if you'll free us, I need to send a message to the leadership. They need to know I've made contact with Voltron."
"Go with them." The princess turned to Shiro, "And keep an eye on them."
"Oh! Can we go!?" Hunk asked, eyes sparkling.
Green jumped up, hands together, "I wanna see how they make the space pocket!"
I looked between the two of them, and then the princess, and back again. Is this how they were all the time? I thought the paladin's of Voltron were like some super incredible chosen ones of the universe. Not a bunch of... children.
"You guys go ahead! I'll hang back and protect the princess." Blue put his hands on his hips, smirking.
Wow. He is not good at making himself look good. The red one took us out, flying his lion slowly towards the base. Ulaz pointed out the technology to green as we went, and I stayed as far away from said green as possible. Now that I've seen it, I can't unsee Kate's eyes on his face.
"There are Galra out there that aren't fighting for Zarkon?"
"We thought expanding the Galra empire would bring stability." Ulaz exclaimed, "We learned too late, a tyrant doesn't seek stability, only power."
We got to the base and landed safely inside, following Ulaz to the main hub. He continued speaking when we were all gathered together again, and the paladin's were busy looking around.
"With our members working on the inside, planning coordinated attacks with Voltron, we may finally have a chance."
"So you have agents working within Zarkon's ranks?" Hunk asked.
"How do you think you got away from Zarkon in that last fight?" Ulaz asked.
I scoffed, "You think those shields around the command centre just went down on their own? Some Voltron luck of the universe?" I laughed, "You've had help from behind the scenes from the beginning. You're not lucky. You're just not alone."
"We've got people risking their lives in this war, just like you." Ulaz finished.
"If you have people on the inside, can you tell me where my family is?" Green asked, shocking me, "They were taken the same time Shiro was."
"I knew others from Earth were captured. I never saw them, but I have some records of Galra prisoners here. I can transmit them to your ship."
Green nodded, and Ulaz turned back to the computer. I looked from them to the red, who was eyeing Ulaz's sword with this weird look. Like he was... constipated.
"What's that weapon you carry?"
Ulaz nodded to me and I pursed my lips, slightly annoyed. I pulled out my blade and held it out to him, "It's a ceremonial blade that each member of our order carries. You can't get these blades anywhere outside of the Marmora."
He hummed, "Nice."
Nice? Seriously?!
A warning light went off, and then the siren started blaring with it.
An enemy Galra ship was headed straight for us, in particular, towards Voltron's ship.
"You were tracked!" Ulaz turned, eyes dark.
"What? Us?" Green gasped.
"If Zarkon knows we're here, it's because you ratted us out!"
I growled, "For the last time, we're on your side! This is the worst case scenario for all of us, you know!"
"It's another one of Zarkon's robot beasts! Ro-beast!" Hunk yelled, pointing back to the screen.
"We have to get back to the ship!" Shiro instructed, and Ulaz quickly turned, pulling a drive out of the keyboard.
"Shiro, wait! These are instructions on how to reach the Blade of Marmora headquarters." Ulaz held it out, "Before you go there, find out how Zarkon is tracking you. If you lead him there, our entire underground network, everything we've spent centuries building, will be lost."
Shiro took the drive and promised Ulaz he'd do whatever it takes to make sure Zarkon got off their tail. Ulaz grabbed both my shoulders as they turned, gripping them hard, "Go with them."
"What?!" I screeched, "Why?!"
"Just listen to me. Help them get to the blade."
"What are you saying?! I'll just go back to the blade with you to wait for them when this is over!"
He narrowed his eyes, "I have to send a message out, and depending on the battle ahead, I cannot guarantee your safety. You are still a scout, with a lifetime of good things ahead of you. I knew your father. I will not put you in danger, knowing he watches."
"I-I-I can't go with them! They hate me!"
"They will learn to welcome you. You must have patience. You have come a long way, Leigh."
My eyes bulged. How did he?
"Go! Now! That's an order!"
I clenched my teeth and turned on my heel, sprinting after Shiro and the others. He made sure to wait for me, pulling me on the ship just as the mouth of the lion closed behind me.
