Everyone stood straight and headed out of the hangar to suit up and get ready. Coran ran off back to the front room to guide the ship towards the new set of coordinates, which luckily weren't far. I followed Allura quietly back to the room, and the others met up with us one by one. I leaned on the back wall away from everyone, eyes to the floor. This feeling was even worse than when I felt like an outcast back in the Garrison.
At least, in the Garrison, we all looked the same.
"The signal came from Olkarion, home to the Olkari." Coran explained as the planet came into view, "A proud class of engineers, builders of vast cities that could change shape at the whim of their creators."
"They had a seemingly magical ability to manipulate solid metal." Allura continued, showing us pictures, "With just a wave of their hands they could build a computer inside a block of steel."
"An Olkari once gave me this!" Coran whipped around and held up something, but I couldn't see what it was from all the way at the back of the room. Everyone was huddled around him, blocking the thing he was holding.
"What is it?" Lance asked.
"Uh, hello! It's a floating cube!" Coran laughed, crossing his arms, "Watch! My name is Coran, and I'm a gorgeous man."
The flying cube let out some muffled white noise, and then repeated exactly what Coran said. Pidge seemed overjoyed, but everyone else didn't seem as impressed.
"Why would a society full of literal tech wizards, use spores to send a distress signal?" Keith asked.
"Who cares?" Pidge scoffed in reply, "When do we get to see that city?!"
I blinked as he turned around, eyes wide, grinning up to Allura. His smarts annoyed me, because I'd always blamed myself for not being smart enough. If I was anything like Kate, maybe I'd have more friends. Maybe I'd have a better purpose, and I wouldn't have 'died' in that jet that day.
But, for some reason, at the same time... even though my envy and anger controlled me, watching Pidge get excited over this stuff was kind of...
"Actually, the distress signal isn't coming from the city. It's coming from... the forest."
Pidge's face fell into despair, and I held back a snort as the ship locked it's position just outside the planet's atmosphere, cloaking themselves and getting ready to move out.
As the paladin's headed to their shoots, which got them down to their lions faster, Allura turned to me.
"Vrokta." She began, and I eyed her. What's it gonna be? Locked in my room until they get back? Maybe she'll take me down there just so she can 'forget' me there.
"Stay here."
"AGAIN?!" I screamed, the paladin's froze in place, "I'm sick of this! I'm going to my room!"
"No! I cannot leave you unsupervised. You will stay here with Coran and I-"
"Put a sock in it, Princess. Why don't you let me go down there with the Paladin's? I can help them. And if you're lucky, maybe I'll die in battle like Ulaz did!"
"Vrokta!" Shiro scolded.
I chuckled, "What, don't act like it hasn't crossed your minds. I know you'd rather I not be here."
"I know Ulaz's death has upset you greatly, but I cannot deploy someone I cannot trust. I don't even know if you can fight."
I pulled out my sword from my back and held it out to her head, "Want a demonstration here, or on Olkarion?"
She shut her eyes in defeat, "Fine. Shiro?"
"Come on, Vrokta."
Finally. I quickly followed the male to his lion, and stood behind his seat to look out as we headed into the forest. I could finally breathe some fresh air. As we flew, Shiro turned off the communication link for a second to speak privately with me.
"What you said back there was a little too far. I know you feel uncomfortable here, but you know that none of us would ever raise our arms to someone who hadn't already posed a threat to us. That's not who we are."
"I'm only worried about Allura. The way she looks at me... you have to see it too."
"I know, trust me." He sighed, "But she'll come around. Her entire planet was destroyed by Zarkon and his Galra forces. Her and Coran are the only ones left, having been put in stasis for 10,000 years. She's mourning her own loses, too."
Too bad I don't care. My mourning Ulaz doesn't include hating Voltron for not being able to save themselves. But for some reason, Allura mourning her family includes the absolute disgust of every single Galra like person.
"By the way, back there, you said a human phrase."
I rose a brow, "What do you mean?"
"You told Allura to 'put a sock in it'. Where did you hear that?"
"Well... I...uh-"
"Oh, hold on." He interrupted, "I've gotta turn the link back on."
He flipped a switch, and the others voices spoke out through the lion. Pidge was complaining about the outdoors, and sunburns, and Keith was saying it was nice because it was quiet. Huh. Looks like I have more in common with the angry emo kid than I thought.
Wait... aren't I also an angry emo kid?
"Uh... are we being attacked?" Keith suddenly asked.
The black lion shook, and I gripped onto the back of Shiro's seat as we started heading downwards.
"What the-"
"Something's pulling me down." Shiro announced, and Lance conferred that the same was happening to him.
Luckily, what met us on the ground of the forest wasn't a troop of Zarkon's robot soldiers. It was a group of Olkarion's, who'd taken refuge from the city in the trees, where the fleets had no interest in being. The technology was in the city, after all.
"We come in peace!" Shiro called out to them, and I rolled my eyes. Seriously, that saying is the worst way to introduce yourself.
A single Olkarian stepped forward, lowering their hood, "Could it be? Voltron?"
Yup, see? Should have just said 'We are the Paladin's of Voltron!' In a real deep voice. Maybe they'll throw us a parade.
Pidge showed them the squishy asteroid he'd taken, "We found your distress signal!" He announced, and then suddenly they were cheering like we'd told them they'd won the game show.
Keep your mask on. I reminded myself, following Shiro out of the mouth of the lion. Pidge told everyone the air was safe for us to breathe, and the others took their helmets off right away. I followed near the back, Shiro at the front. Keith was just a step in front of me, and glanced back at me.
"You can take that off, you know."
"Can I?" I asked, looking at him. We were the same height, "You sure everyone won't cower and scream 'Galra spy!' Or something?"
He blinked, turning back to the front of him as we walked up an uphill bridge, "Right. Sorry."
I eyed him for another moment, but once we got to the top of the uphill to a balcony overlooking the forest, I forgot about how weird he was acting. They'd built another huge city through the trees and bushes. Their technology was literally flowing through the roots of the forest now. It was incredible.
I glanced down at Pidge, his eyes were wide and his mouth was open, grinning in shock and impressment. The leader of the city moved us back down the uphill to a specific site with a glowing orb coming out of a tree, Pidge running up ahead of us.
"Coran was right. You really are the most incredible engineers in the universe. To be able to go from working with precision machinery to a bunch of sticks!"
"Nature's designs are superior to any that we could devise." Ryner replied simply, smiling.
"No offence, but I'll take my computer over a tree any day."
"You two can talk science later." Shiro interrupted, "Let's assemble Voltron and get rid of those Galra invaders."
"It's not that simple I'm afraid. They have our leader, Lubos. If you attack, who knows what they'll do to him."
I stepped up beside Shiro, "A covert rescue and siege mission. It is doable."
He glanced down at me and then back to Ryner, who eyed me for a moment too long.
"Alright. Get ready for a rescue, paladin's!"
The so called paladin's each called out in response, pumping themselves up for the mission ahead. And finally, I was gonna get to bash somebody's face in.
