Unlike what the two men's parents expected, Pat nor Pran showed up the following day at their houses. They had waited patiently all day long, pacing back and forth, both couples checking by the window to see if their not so friendly neighbours had some visit or not only to go back to pacing.
Dissaya had had another argument with her husband about her behaviour with their son all those years ago and she felt bad again. They both had a difficult time during those five years away from Pran. That day, the one when she had raised her hand on her precious son, she had never felt so regretful in her life. It had been eating at her ever since.
She was just so angry that day. She remembered quite vividly the rage filling her insides up as soon as the truth came out of her son's lips. What is happening to him, she remembered thinking while they argued. Many times she had told Pran to not get involved with the neighbours' kids. She knew exactly what kind of man Ming was, of course she did, she knew him too well. What he had done to her, the way he had ruined her chances to have the career of her dreams just to fill his greedy needs to have it all...she simply couldn't have her son go through that as well.
Pran had always been such a sweet child, never one to fight or argue with anybody. Dissaya had actually been surprised the first time she had been called by Pran's elementary school principal because of a fight. Pat had been known to tease Pran a little beforehand and they had had many complaints about it sent to Pat's parents only for it to be completely disregarded and forgotten about. But that day, Pran had talked back. He had teased Pat back and Pat had gotten angry after the entire classroom laughed.
This was their first real fight.
Dissaya hadn't really wanted to scold her child that day, simply because she knew Pran had waited until he couldn't take the teasing anymore to say something back. Pran hated confrontations. He hated being disliked by others because he always felt it was his fault. He hated talking back or fighting back because it brought attention to himself and even though Pran didn't look much like it, he had always been quite the introvert.
Knowing exactly the way Pran was, she had expected it. Them being friends one day. Of course she had. Pran didn't want people to hate him, especially for no reason, which was why Dissaya knew that the day she would find out Pat and Pran were friends would eventually come. And it did, just like she had expected and somehow that angered her even more. Because, despite all her efforts at telling Pran not to befriend them, Pran had still fallen for Pat's tricks.
She was scared.
Scared that Pat would be just like his father, that he would use Pran for his own benefit and that Pran would be too innocent to see it. She only wanted to protect her little baby. She knew Pran had been mad at her and her husband for transferring him to another school that year. It had been a rash move on her part, she had been so angry that she just couldn't think of another thing to do. So that was what she had settled on.
When she had come to know about them being in the same university again, she just couldn't help but wait for the day Pran would be caught hanging out with Pat again. Because she knew her son so well that it was just bound to happen. She knew that Pran had always fought Pat back to please her and appease her fear of him getting hurt. When she had heard the commotion coming from the neighbours' house that day, she knew it had something to do with Pran. But she was far from expecting the two of them to have fallen in love.
Actually, she had refused to believe it.
They were supposed to hate each other. How could they ever feel love towards each other? She wanted to believe Pat was like his father so much that she hurt Pran in the process. And when they both disappeared, not saying anything, Dissaya felt her heart break. She had drawn her own son away from her. She worried for days as she called and called without success. Until he answered the call...and she got angry again.
