THURSDAY | DECEMBER 5

She pulled the duvet off her face, dazed from sleep. She blinked several times as she looked around her room. No one was there. Her father, who refused to leave her alone, was nowhere in sight. Strange, but a relief.

He always insisted on nursing her back to health, but she didn't want to burden him. He had a school to look after, and he couldn't do what he needed to if he was here making sure she ate and took her medicine. Fortunately, she slept well through the day, prompting him to slip away.

Upon discovering the room's orange hue, she looked at her clock in haste for the exact time, but it wasn't there. The only thing on the table was a little sticky note. She sat up, recognizing the handwriting, and reached out to pick up the note to get a closer look.

"My Dearest Mizuki. You missed lunch, so I made you a hefty dinner," the note read. "Ensure you eat, take your medicine, and return to bed. Yuki will check up on you. Love, father."

A smile tugged at her lips; the message from her parent warmed her heart. Though it wasn't a surprise that he would leave such a reminder, she couldn't help but be relieved that he would still do such a thing when he was so busy nowadays.

She went to put the note back until she noticed the black ink her father had used was bleeding through the paper from the other side. She turned the note on its back to find more words directed at her.

"Do not leave the house!"

She couldn't help but chuckle at the stern command. It was hilarious that her father would think she wouldn't go out when he wasn't here to supervise her. This was her opportunity.

The girl jumped out of bed and dashed to her wardrobe to find something to keep her warm. Upon opening the wardrobe's door, she grabbed whatever she saw first and slipped it on. In her frantic state, she heard paper shifting in her right ear. She looked over to see another note.

"I mean it, Mizuki," the note said in its same handwriting.

After a moment of thinking it over, she defied the note and went to leave her room. Approaching the door, she noticed another sticky note on it.

"Don't you dare open this door, young lady!"

Mizuki groaned and grabbed the note, only to find another one underneath it.

"Are you ignoring me? I said stay in bed."

"But I just need to see how things are going," she protested to the paper as if it was her father. She slipped on her slippers quickly and grabbed the doorknob. Instead of thrusting it open to match her hurried behavior, she carefully twisted the knob and slowly pushed it open.

She took a moment to listen for anyone, steadying her breathing and trying to listen past her strong heartbeats. Opening it more, she peered down the hall, looking left, then right. Finding no one, she couldn't help but smile.

"I'll just be a minute or so," she promised herself, mainly her father, who was not there to hear her. "Just a minute."

And with that, she hurried out of her doorway and through the house to eventually escape.

No matter the weather or season. In sweltering summers, thundering springs, chilly autumns, or arctic winters, the students here at Cross Academy would doll themselves up and flock with anticipation to the gates of the Moon Dorm.

It was an unnecessary tradition that involved the Day Class bearing witness to the Night Class, students who attend lectures at night. Although these students weren't doing anything special in the Academy, the Day Class would argue that the Night Class was too beautiful for this world.
