Mizuki scratched her head as she couldn't find anyone anywhere. She went to the dorms, and there was no sign of Yuki or Zero. She also checked the Headmaster's quarters, but no one was there, so she quickly left and returned to school.
As she approached the school in a jog, she couldn't help but think of the thought that Zero had been a vampire all this time. There was no way she was jumping to conclusions; everything made sense, from how Zero became distant from everyone, skipping meals, his sickly complexion, and that smell that reminded her of a level E vampire.
Mizuki once had encountered a level E vampire before this day, when she was a toddler. It was so long ago, and she could only remember that day in bits and pieces. But she remembered being held up by the vampire and smelling the scent that Zero had on him now. Death. It smelled like the individual was dying from the inside out.
"He hasn't tasted blood yet, right? If he hadn't, then does that mean he's..." Mizuki hesitated momentarily, her heart sinking from the thoughts running through her mind. "He's slowly killing himself because he hasn't had blood yet. Damnit! How could I be so blind and stupid?"
She couldn't believe she was just now discovering this. She always associated this deathly smell with level E vampires, but her mind didn't make the connection.
Mizuki stopped walking, holding her face in her hands and shaking her head. "Am I thinking too far into this?" Mizuki thought. "If Zero's a vampire, why didn't he tell me? Why didn't he tell anyone?" She then shook her head again. "I need to find him and think about all this later..."
She looked up at the school, hoping to see Zero or Yuki passing by any windows, but her eyes caught a light coming from one of them. It almost resembled a small flame on the wick of a candle. Not knowing what it was, Mizuki quickly ran inside.
Running inside and up the stairs, a smell hit her, which caused her to freeze. It was the powerful smell of blood that almost made her gag. Worry and panic quickly consumed her, and she bolted up the stairs, taking out Hades to prepare for a fight.
When she went to go up the next flight of stairs, Mizuki suddenly froze when she saw Zero holding onto Yuki from behind. It almost looked like lovers meeting secretly in the stairwell. But, upon looking closer, her heart quickened when she noticed the fear in Yuki's eyes and Zero biting her neck. She didn't have time to process what was happening entirely. All she knew was that Yuki was uncomfortable and afraid, and Zero was the cause.
"Zero, get off of her!" Mizuki shouted, throwing down Hades, and rushed up the stairs to pry Zero off.
Yuki wiggled desperately to escape his hold, screaming, "Zero, stop, please!"
The sound of Yuki's pleading inserted more panic into Mizuki, making her fear that Yuki's life was threatening to end right then and there.
Not knowing what else to do, Mizuki cocked back her fist and gave Zero a right hook to the face. The blow caused him to knock his head back and fall to the floor on his back.
Mizuki grabbed Yuki and pushed her up the stairs, putting distance between them and Zero.
They panted and trembled as they stared back at Zero as he sat up on his knees, holding his right eye and groaning in pain. He then looked up at them, and they saw his chin dripping with blood and his eyes glowing red.
Mizuki shook her head, not believing her eyes, even though she was sure he was what he was earlier. Seeing it and coming to grips with what he had just done to Yuki made her emotional.
"Why... Why did you...?" Yuki asked in a shaky voice, holding her neck that was wet. She took her hand away and stared down at it. It was covered in her blood, soaking her bandages and the hem of her sleeve.
