Knocking came upon the door, causing Zero to lift his head slightly.

He wasn't resting, only overthinking the value of his time and life. His mind has been on that thought since last night. He was constantly contemplating keeping his promise to Mizuki and Yuki all day, wondering if he should let Toga just kill him and save everyone from the pain and burden of his turning.

Toga and Kaien had spoken to him earlier. They didn't encourage him to do anything, to calm down or else he would do something he'd regret. He was sure they were worried about him turning and massacring the entire school.

Yuki and Mizuki hadn't tried to see him all day. Good. He was too ashamed to see them right now.

He lost control of himself and would have bitten Yuki again if Mizuki wasn't there to stop him. So it was best to say that their efforts at keeping him around were useless.

And although he didn't want to see Mizuki or Yuki, or else they'd persuade him to keep fighting, he thought he'd better make it clear where his mind was. Mizuki always told him to speak his mind, no matter what.

Zero sat up and stared at his bedroom door. His breath was slow and steady, so he could hear who was on the other side. He waited for a moment before another series of knocks and a familiar voice called to him.

"Zero. It's me, Mizuki."

His heart skipped a beat from Mizuki's voice. Zero was kind of hoping it was Yuki. She was so easily convinced to believe everything was fine, that he was feeling better than ever. Or he could get her annoyed with him by giving her the cold shoulder.

But Mizuki... Mizuki could see right through him; his reserved demeanor never convinced her. She always knew when something was bothering him and if he was lying to her. There were hundreds of times when she nearly found out he was a vampire, just by simply looking at him. It was like she had a peephole in his mind and read him like a book.

"Zero," Mizuki's muffled voice called to him again. "Open the door."

Zero stood up from the bed and made his way over to the door. He reached out to grab the doorknob but stopped when he suddenly grew anxious. This was the first time he'd seen her since last night, and he wasn't sure if she was going to tear him a new one or not for nearly hurting Yuki again.

"Damnit," he thought. Was he really in the mood to be beaten down by Mizuki?

"If you think I'm gonna hurt you, I'm not."

Zero growled, defeated that she understood exactly what was on his mind even when they hadn't seen each other all day.

"You should; I almost did it again! I almost bit Yuki again," he groaned, banging his fist on the door. "You should try to tear this door down to get to me, but you're not."

There was a moment of silence. A long silence that made him think Mizuki wasn't there anymore. He waited a few more seconds before lifting his head to listen better; listening for signs of her presence. And then she spoke.

"We should talk face to face, not with a door between us," Mizuki said softly.

Zero thought for a moment but unlocked the door and opened the door to Mizuki, waiting for him with a tray of food.

"Finally, I thought I was going to have to go back downstairs and tell Father you didn't want to eat," she said, lifting the tray for him to see the freshly made rice porridge decorated with spring onions and served with a side of salted salmon and pickled plums. It was a surprise to see, but the sight of food made him realize how hungry he was.

"I'm not hungry," he loved, turning his gaze. He glanced up at her to see her making an amused gaze at him.

"Bullshit. The sounds of your stomach growling could be heard from the kitchen."
