Chapter 13

---

I walked along the side of the prison, my feet kicking some stray pebbles that rest on the untouched cement. My heartbeat finally went back to normal, I ran almost all the way back from the pharmacy.

The sound of gunshots rang out around me, my instincts kick in and I drop to the ground and lay in a fatal position. Clanking metal and squealing breakers echo in the silence.

The sounds eventually fade from around me and I slowly stand up and gather my bearings, I walk toward the front of the prison, slowly and cautiously.

What I saw was enuf to stop my heart.

The main gate had been bust open and at least 60 walkers roamed the courtyard. Beth, Carl, Hershel, Maggie and Glenn, were all in the main yard with guns while Rick, Daryl and a man I recognized as Daryl's brother Merle, stood outside the fence with awestruck expressions.

My heart was begging me to run into Daryl's arms like some silly damsel in distress, but my pride was saying otherwise.

'Show him you don't need him' I thought.

I gripped the chain link fence and smoothly climbed to the top, I bent me knees and landed gently on the ground. The walkers still wondered the courtyard, so I pulled some knives from my back pocket as well as holding tightly to my hatchet. My knives sliced the air and then the rotting flesh of the dead that walked.

Behind me I heard a gate open, a walker that was stumbling toward me was pierced by a familiar arrow. Rick, Daryl, Merle and I made our way to the main yard, we didn't kill them all but we managed to reach the others.

We regrouped and I handed my backpack of baby supplies to Beth who was now trying to hush the crying Judith. She gave me a thankful look as did Rick.

We walked into the cell block together. They sat at one of the steal table and started to discus what we were going to do with Merle, while I sat alone at a table in the far corner by myself.

Daryl sat beside me and set his crossbow and bag down beside me.

"Look, Piper. I didn't want to leave you, but I had to, I was going to have to kill my brother, but he helped me get out of that hell hole, and he didn't want to come here." He spoke sincerely.

"It's fine Daryl" I muttered. To be perfectly honest, it hurt to talk about.

He leaned over and rested his head in his hands, his back was exposed because of a large rip in his shirt. Baby pink scars covered his rough skin.

"Daryl, what happens to your back?" I asked as I ran my fingered over the warm scars.

"When I was younger, my dad....he did things to us" he al,oat joked on his words.

"That's why I needed to stay with Merle, even though he left me, I needed to be there for him." He said.

My eyes widened and my head shot over to look at him.

"Daryl, I didn't no, I'm so sorry." I whispered. His gaze reached mine and he wrapped me in his warm embrace. I rested my head on his beating heart.

"It's okay baby girl, I'm okay. After all that's happened, even in all this chaos, I've found something amazing" he said, his words were slightly muffled because his chin was tested on my head.

I didn't have to ask him to know what he meant.

I'm the background, Rick was rambling on about the people of Woodberry wanting a war.

If they wanted a war, then that's what they'll get.
