Luz woke up to the sound of her alarm. She turned it off, dragging herself out of bed. She grabbed an outfit, and walked to the bathroom. Throwing on a pair of jeans and a white tee, followed by a brown jacket, she ran her fingers through her short hair, and slid on her vans.
It was the first time she'd been to school since Amity died.
She collected her books off her nightstand and slid them into her backpack. She quickly jogged out her room, yelling 'bye' to Eda, and out the front door.
She kicked rocks and dirt as she walked to school, checking her phone every once in a while to make sure she wasn't going to late. As she reached the stairs, many people sat outside, having small conversations. Luz walked past them and into the school. She slowed down her pace a little as memories stabbed her in the chest. The air burned her lungs. The sight burned her eyes. She paced over to her locker, trying to avoid Amity's. The memorial around it made it hard to miss, though.
She took in a shaky breath as the air around her seemed to become silent and still. She could feel eyes on her. Eyes of pity.
She quickly placed her books in her locker and grabbed out the ones she needed, shutting it and speed-walking to her class.
Sitting down, she still felt eyes on her. She kept her eyes to herself, not wanting pity from anyone. Her teacher eventually came in and started class.
Class dragged on. Luz couldn't pay attention. Her heard whirled, and her ears rang. All she could think about was Amity.
Amity.
She wouldn't see her after class. In the halls, at her locker.
She would never see Amity again.
"May I go to the restroom?" She blurted out, already standing up.
Without an answer, she picked up her bag, and dashed out of the classroom. She trudged down the hall toward the restrooms, tears staining her cheeks. She picked up her pace, noticing she couldn't control herself.
She slammed a stall closed and immediately fell to the ground. She grabbed her elbows, continuing to sob. Her cheeks ached, and her face and shirt were soaked. Her throat swelled, making it harder to breathe. She wiped her eyes and nose with the sleeve of her jacket, taking a deep breath.
She hadn't cried this hard since Amity was pronounced dead.
Tears fell uncontrollably. Multiple at a time. Luz just sat on the floor with the wall against her back, sobbing into her arms.
"Luz?"
She immediately bit her tongue.
"Luz, I know you're in here," Said a male voice.
"Hunter, what the fuck are you doing in the women's restroom?" Luz mumbled.
"Come out and I might tell you," He teased.
She slowly stood up off the ground, sliding the lock to the stall door, opening it. She walked out and was met with the one and only.
"Come here," He sighed, walking closer and pulling her into his arms.
She fell against his chest, Letting the tears flow again. He just stood there and let her cry, squeezing her tightly.
"I miss her so much, Hunter. I feel so alone, like no one understands. I know everyone is there for me, but it still hurts," She sobbed.
He held her tighter, burying his face into her hair. He knew what it was like to feel alone, like no one understood. When news got out that he was a grimwalker, it felt like the whole world turned against him, but he just had to learn that the people who stuck with him through it, were his true friends.
"I know, Luz. I know, but you're not alone. You're not. I'm here, Willow's here, Gus, Eda, King. I could go on. We're not gonna stand to the side and let you suffer. I love you more than life itself, and I'm gonna do everything in my power to make sure you know that,"
Luz listened carefully to his words, the tears slowly stopping. She lifted herself to see him eye-to-eye, softly smiling.
"I look disgusting. I can see it on your face,"
The two broke into a fit of laughter as Hunter tried to defend himself.
"No, but seriously," Luz stated, her laughter dying out. "Thank you. You guys seriously mean the world to me,"
They smiled at each other, just as the bell began to ring.
"I'll see you later. Need a tampon?" Luz joked, beginning to walk out of the bathroom.
He rolled his eyes, sarcastically laughing, following her out the bathroom.
The rest of the day dragged on. In her last period of the day, Luz was getting out her notebook, when an Azura picture caught her eye.
Shit, I packed the diary.
She looked up at her teacher, who clearly looked tired of his job. She slowly pulled out the book, opening it to where she left off.
June 15th
The doctors won't tell me what's going, but mom and dad seem worried. They've been extremely frantic today, and I keep seeing the doctors talking to them. My head has been throbbing since yesterday, and I haven't had an appetite in three days. I have to take so much medicine, the nurses tell me it's just cough syrup and Tylenol, but something tells me cough syrup doesn't come in 8 capsules. I don't know what's happening to me, and frankly, I'm becoming a little worried. I wouldn't dare tell my friends, though. I don't want to worry them.
Sincerely, Amity

I had blood drawn today. I'm so tired. All I've done is sleep for the day. I have to get a feeding tube tomorrow morning. I can't eat. I'm extremely dehydrated, and my skin is as white as a ghost. I think I'm dying.
Sincerely, Amity
Luz was jerked out of her state of focus as the bell began to ring. She shut the diary and loaded all of her books into her backpack, walking out of class at her teacher's dismissal. She walked to her locker, quickly putting her books away, and jogging out of the building. She began her walk home, taking a deep breath of fresh air.
She just wanted to feel okay.
