When we had gotten off the bus, we had stopped over on Old Cherry Road so Max and I could pack some things for the sleepover. With the hot sun beating on our shoulders, El followed Max into the Mayfield residence while I briskly walked to my own house, excited for the sleepover.
When I went through the garage my heart stopped when I saw my mothers worn down car. I stifled a breath and hesitantly opened the garage door.
The world felt shaky as I walked through the kitchen. I knew my mother would be hung over, but that could entail many things. She could be tired and sick; mostly past out all of the time and watching some sitcom on the T.V. She could also be angry and bitter, only being able to see the world through her evil eyes that shot daggers at everything and everyone around her. I hated when she screamed at me and accused me of lying, or belittling her, or even sleeping with whatever boyfriend she had at the time. My mother hasn't had a boyfriend in some time, thankfully.
My hands were shaky at my sides as I entered the living room, where my mother laid out on the couch. A pair of dark, tired eyes strained at me.
"Oh, Ellis, what have you been up to?" The person who appeared to be my mother, but deep down I knew was just a stranger asked with a small smile.
"Just hanging out with some friends," I respond awkwardly looking around the room, "I was thinking I could spend the night at a friends," My mother's glassy eyes were in my direction but ultimately seemed to be in some far off place.
"Well have fun," The woman slurred while tilting her head back to its original position. As I go to leave to room she starts up again which leaves me frozen.
"Hey dear, would you mind handing me the remote?" I slowly turn around, grab the remote off the coffee table, and give it her her. Mother smiles at me once more, "Thank you honey,"
I don't say anything back, all I do is walk back to my room. I grab a random backpack and throw in some clothes. As I do so I want to sob.
Why is the only time my mother seems real is when she hates me?
I hoist my bag on my shoulders and as I'm walking back through the house I find my mother has blacked out, the sound of the T.V. lulling in the background.
I leave through the garage the same as I had entered and lock the door behind me. I look towards the road to see El and Max waiting for me.
El smiles and waves meanwhile Max gives me a frown, reminding me of our earlier conversation in the mall. Sometimes it's as if Max can always read my thoughts, lies, and emotions. There are parts of Max I understand too.
I understand the girl is a adrenaline junkie. Cuts and bruises all over her legs and a immense love for danger. Maybe she just loves the thrill, but I think it's something else. I think that all she's ever known is adrenaline rushes so that's why she craves it.
Who's knows? Maybe that's just a shot in the dark.
We follow a couple backroads before El cuts into a stretch of forest. At first I hesitate, but as soon as I see Max confidently stride in I relax and follow at the redhead's heel.
After some time, we finally make it to El's forest cabin. The brunette opens the front door with a squeak.
The place is pretty rustic, but still has some charm. The kitchen is small, as well as the the living room, but the small is familiar therefore I am comfortable.
In El's room there are lots of books and a few stuffed animals lining a twin bed. The three of us sit down on the ground and reflect on our mall adventure, but that soon fades to other interests.
