I am taking creative liberty with this chapter. Also TW: Miscarriage and Gore.
A half an hour had passed and we still hadn't heard much from Nancy and Jonathan; and when I say not much I mean nothing at all. It didn't take long for the magazines to get boring, especially when the target demographic of said magazines are middle aged men and women.
"Do you think they're okay?" El asks, breaking the dull atmosphere. We all sit, thinking for a minute.
"I mean, if something major were to happen a nurse would likely notice," Will says, while stretching, his bowl cut falling in his eyes.
"Yeah but what power does one nurse have against what we're dealing with?" Lucas says with a dull, pessimistic tone. He ties a camouflaged-patterned bandana around his forehead, double knotting the ends with a yank.
Nobody says anything, though Lucas doesn't seem to mind. In fact, he's changed a lot since the Billy incident/the Max incident. He's turned bitter, antisocial, never speaking up much except to correct someone or add some pessimistic tone to the conversation. Or of course to tell me that he's well aware of Max and I, but you already know that.
The phone at the front desk sounds and the receptionist picks it up, bringing it close to her ear. Her expression quickly changes from that of boredom, to pure horror.
"What do you mean wild animal? Can't we just call animal control?" She asks loudly, stuttering.
The six of us exchange glances, knowing very well that animal control would be useless. We're apprehensive, but it's nothing more than what we've already dealt with, until we listen to the next two words the woman says.
"There's multiple?"
If the sky had fallen revealing all of humanity to a higher power, I wouldn't had been surprised. It was like those two words had summoned a type of evil beyond our comprehension.
Screams erupted from around the hospital, horrible sounds that felt like you'd swallowed a handful of needles. The lights went out, only leaving dim emergency lights that did little justice to our vision. Alarms sounded from the floor above us, causing us all to jump to our feet.
El begins to run down the hall without any warning. Her footsteps sound as her sneakers smack into the linoleum floor.
"El!" Mike shouts, attempting to take off after her. Will and I both quickly grab him, stopping him in his tracks.
"If you go after her, you will die," I say, digging my nails hard into his arm when he tries to escape Will and I's grasp.
The woman from behind the desk dashes in front of our group and starts telling us instructions, however I can't hear a single word because my blood is pounding in my ears so viscerally. The Mind Flayer must have summoned monsters from the same place the demogorgon that had almost killed me came from. There are multiple monsters in this building and I feel the horrible sense of death.
Despite the alarms and the screaming and the fucking blood pounding violently in my head, it is all drowned out by a low rumbling growl entering the room. I can feel the floor humming beneath my feet and I am frozen, unable to produce a sound.
A fleshy creature stalks from behind the woman, veiny purple muscles bulging from its limbs and torso. Liquid oozes from its skin, leaving behind a yellow trail of squelching slime. Its face consisted of rows of compacted, yellow teeth that protruded outward from its lips. Though having the usual makeup of a demogorgon, this creature has a long, barbed tongue that could rip the meat from your bones.
