I cannot read the expression on Max's face. Her light ginger eyebrows are slightly furrowed and her eyes are wide. Her lips are parted just enough to make her two front teeth visible. We stare at one another for a few moments.
Disbelief? Anguish? Fear? I can't tell how Max feels. I'd rather Max Mayfield tell me that she hates me than have this silence. This uncertainty.
My chest heaves up and down, my anxiety further spiking with each breath. The girl's eyes follow my shoulders as they rise and fall. Even with Max's unreadable emotion, she still looks beautiful.
Strands of hair had fell out of her ponytail and in her face. Purple and pink bruises adorn her knees, probably from skateboarding. The redhead's chapped pink lips, with excess blood covering where her teeth would land, are still something I would do anything for them to kiss me, whisper long forgotten things in my ear. Her eyes remain piercing through my heart as if it hadn't already been hurt enough.
Max takes a shallow breath and looks like she's about to say something when the closet door opens with a creak. I jump, startled from the sudden break of silence. Max stands motionless.
In the doorway stands Will, knobby knees and all. He gives a small wave when we make eye contact.
"The guys were getting impatient so they sent me here to help," Will says with a smile. I dont say anything, I just give him a small nod. Max doesn't say anything either, the same undiscernable look on her face.
I look back at the plastic dummy which is sitting on a stool. The way it's propped against the wall makes it seems like it's staring right at me. Though it lacks a face it almost seems to be scowling at me, judging me for my sins.
It's probably telling me You know better than this, it's wrong to feel this way for a girl or You're going to rot in hell where you belong.
It doesn't take us long to bring the dummy back to the sauna. The three of us had walked in silence. Will had quickly noticed Max's changed manner, even looking to me at one point for some type of explanation. I just broke away from his gaze.
The plan is fully set up. The dummy was in the sauna and we are all in our places. Lucas would signal to Mike when to start using the Walkie-Talkie to lure Billy to the sauna. Once Billy was in the sauna, Will and Max would signal to El to slam Billy in the room while I would lock the door.
Will and Max were hidden behind a couple lockers, barely in view, while El and I were hidden behind the opened sauna door. Even from far away I can tell Max is staring at me. She doesn't seem mad or hateful, maybe just a little lost. She hasn't so far told anyone I'm a homosexual so I'll take that as a win.
Suddenly, Mikes voice erupts from the Walkie-Talkie.
"You can't get me dummy!" His obnoxious, ear-grating voice sounds. Heavy footsteps echo not far off. I keep my sights on Will, preparing myself for his signal.
Soon Billy's footstep are very close. I hear him as he walks past the door and my hands shake. One wrong movement could ruin this entire plan. Even if Billy wasn't flayed he could still do a lot of damage, so I don't want to find out what flayed Billy was capable of.
As soon as Will gives the signal, El thrusts her hand and slams Billy into the white bricked wall using her mind, blood edging her nose as she does so. I launch myself forward and slam the wooden panel down, locking the door. Mike, Lucas, Will, and Max walk over to the Sauna door. Billy is screaming and slamming his fists on the door.
After a couple moments black cracks spread across his skin. His screams are shrill and I taste the bitter vomit rising into my throat. Sweat drips across his face and dampens his hair. I turn back towards Max who looks horrified.
