"Mom, I need a band-aid." Kaleah said running into the house.
I turned from my laptop and looked at my goddaughter.
"What are you-- What's the problem?" I ask her.
"I tried a new trick on Micah's skateboard." She smiled. "Almost landed, but didn't." She said shaking her head.
"Oh yeah? Well tell Micah, he needs to buy you some knee and elbow pads." I say walking to the bathroom closet.
I grabbed the box of large band-aids and a towel to clean her blood. I couldn't help but to laugh at the little girl's toughness. Kaleah reminds me so much of her mom, Halle. She was a tough girl. We both were and that's why our parents hated us hanging out with one another. Halle's parents said I was a bad influence, my mom said she was a bad influence on me, it was a bunch of mess. But no matter what we looked out for each other like sisters. That's what us project kids do.
Unfortunately, only a few of us made it out, me included. I'm not from New York , I'm from Chicago, the south side. I moved to New York at 17 to finish high school and then went to college. My mom and I don't talk much anymore we just argue when we speak to one another. Mostly about my brother. He's in the streets and as detective, I don't want anything to do with it. Somehow every time I go back home to the projects, everybody wants to lure me into their unethical businesses and tell me to keep their secrets. I'm more loyal than anybody else I know but I took an oath and I have a job to do.
"No more skateboarding today, okay?"
"Yes ma'am." Kaleah said sounding down.
Knock. Knock. Knock. Knock.
"Hold on." I say pointing my finger.
I walk to the door and opened it. It was Benson.
"Captain Benson? What are you doing here?" I ask opening the door.
I looked her up and down slowly, I couldn't help but to swipe my tongue over my bottom lip. She looked so good.
