# Chapter One

It was the start of a new year at windbay. Some of The kids who had just recently graduated elementary school in June were all talking excitedly to each other, some hadn't seen each other ************all summer,************ and going to their respective groups. Meanwhile, a girl with short brown hair and a Nirvana T-Shirt sighs and goes over to a bench.

Dana Flores hated crowds. And she hated people even more. It wasn't like she *****knew***** most of them either. The girl had just moved from a quiet town in Pennsylvania to the loud, people-filled city of North River Heights in Manhattan. In freaking ***********Manhattan.*********** It was a lot. And even though she had her cousin and his friends (and now they were technically hers as well) she didn't want to seem uncool or clingy by hanging around them all the time. She needed to learn to make her own friends.

Just then, a voice suddenly interrupted her thoughts. "Dana, are you listening to me? We'll be late for the assembly!"

Julian Albans. The jacket-wearing bad boy she had grown to somewhat like. The two were complete opposites- Julian was apparently the most popular boy in elementary and his popularity streak didn't seem like it was going to die any time soon. He was also loud and funny. Dana, instead, was a loner who preferred drawing over people, and her popularity was non-existent.

"Alright, alright, I'm coming." Dana huffed as she heaved her backpack over her shoulder and began rushing behind Julian inside the school and to the hall.

When the two entered, the hall was filled with kids, sitting on chairs and loudly chatting to their friends, as they all waited impatiently for the assembly to start. Both Dana and Julian took the two free seats next to Mikey and Matthew, who had been clearly saving it for them.

"Where have you been?" Mikey questioned. "Yeah, it's been like forever!" added Matthew. "We were just outside, jeez you guys." Julian rudely explained. No one spoke about it after that, the group occasionally made small talk until the hall fell unexpectedly silent. Just then, the principal, Mr Tushman (a stupid name I know) walked into the stage and approached the microphone, a projector lowering behind him.

"Welcome to Windbay Elementary kids, I hope you all have been welcomed by all the older children and teachers." The man started, "In this assembly I'll be explaining our rules and make a few announcements, and afterwards you will pick up your schedules up here and some of our 7th graders who have so kindly offered to show you around will be taking you on a full tour around the school."

The projector turned on. It was one of those slideshow things, Dana couldn't remember what they were called, she wasn't paying much attention anyway. Did the school really expect a bunch of kids to pay attention to a dumb presentation? Dana could already see tonnes of kids half falling asleep listening to Mr Macky's speech. Whatever. Dana didn't break any rules anyway.

Finally the stupid lecture ended, but Mr Macky's speech did *****not.***** He continued rambling about 'morals' and 'respect'- things no kid ever respected. She was practically falling asleep until one part of his announcements caught her attention:

"So as you may know, we have a few new kids in our city and this school," Mr Macky spoke, "but our windbay community likes to be as diverse as possible, and to help us with this we have decided to take in a couple exchange students from other countries. These are the names of the students..." He pulled out a list from his pocket and began to read:

"Spanish Exchange Students - Rocco Hernandez, Doris Rojo

Irish Exchange Students - Conor McKee, Marie Donnelly

Australian Exchange Student - Atticus Busby

Columbian Exchange Student - Camilo Madrigal

Canadian Exchange Student - Christopher Adams, I hope you all will give them a very warm Windbay welcome."

Dana rolled her eyes, *****more***** annoying kids?! Just her luck...Mr Macky then ended the assembly and everyone stood up to get their schedules at the front of the room. The teachers had to keep telling everyone to get back in line because people kept jumping the queue. Finally, it was Dana's turn. Some teaching assistant handed her the schedule. She skimmed through it quickly but one class caught her eye...
