—---Jason’s POV—---
Maya showed up at my door at 8:00, right when school started. “You told me to be here. Even though I don’t know why, I’m here.”
“Let’s go for a walk, Hart. We’ll see what trouble we can get into,” I said, bumping her shoulder as we headed down the stairs. My duffel bag swung and bounced the whole way down, full of surprises for her later.
We walked the streets of Manhattan for a while, not sure where we were going but never staying in one place for two long. I paid for lunch from McDonalds, and for dinner we swung by the Nighthawk Diner, where Maya’s mom used to work. I could tell that she was thinking the whole time, so I didn’t say much, if anything at all.
After dinner, we kept walking until we reached Christopher Park. I used to go there all the time with Brandin, climbing trees, and eventually I introduced Evan and Brandin there. Then they got together and I spent my time third wheeling with them, but of course he had the accident. I hadn’t been back since.
Maya scoped the place out, almost as if she was looking for someone. But no one else but us were there.
I opened the duffel bag I had, and pulled out a hammer, two bricks, and several cans of spray paint. I tossed a bright red can to Maya, before grabbing a hammer myself.
“Alright Hart, time to find out who you are.”
“What do you mean?”
“You see that statue over there?” I said, nodding my head over to the nearby statue. There were four little kids holding hands, looking like they were having a good time just being together.
She nodded, still looking confused.
“Who do they remind you of?” I asked. “I know who they remind me of.”
Before Maya could reply, a voice called out, “Hart?”
Two girls walked over to us, clearly looking like who Maya claimed she was. I could see mischief in their eyes, and trouble on their faces.
“Hart!” the girl on the left shouted. She had curly hair, dark clothing, but still had a delicate touch to her rough exterior.
“It’s you, isn’t it?” the other said. Her hair was straight, but she also wore dark clothing, and she seemed to be the leader of the two.
“Yeah, it’s me. Carla?”
“It’s been a while,” The girl on the right, evidently Carla, answered. “Nice jacket.”
“Oh, thanks.” Maya picked at her jacket.
“Give it to me.”
After a moment, Maya slowly started to take it off.
“Oh, man, I’m just messing with you, Hart,” Carla said, causing all of us to chuckle a little. I chuckled mostly because I didn’t want to feel left out.
“Messin’ with you!” Renee shouted. I gave her a funny look.
“So, what are you doing here? And who’s he?” Carla asked.
“You know, I just came back to visit a little. This is-”
“-Nathan,” I cut over Maya. She looked at me for a second before nodding. “I’m Nathan, and I can introduce myself.”
“Nice to meet you, Nathan,” Carla said, looking me up and down.
Ew. She is so not my type.
“Nice to meet you!” Renee yelled. We all looked at her this time.
