After the whole Maya fiasco, things seemed to calm down. Maya and I started spending more time together. She would just pop up on days when Riley would be spending mandatory family time with her parents. Not that she wanted to do this, I could hear some arguments from my window above the infamous bay window.

We’d just talk about stuff. Maya would gush about Lucas and how now that she knew who she was, she was sure that Lucas was the one for her. I would talk about more important things, like explaining the Pixar theory in detail to her, complete with a powerpoint presentation compiled from the movies and various youtube videos. We also watched Hercules together because it slaps.

Lucas would join us sometimes, and would talk about his time in Texas. Maya would usually bring a notepad to write down more nicknames for him, and I would just listen. He shared about his line-dancing classes, the adventures he and his friends got up to, and all about his dad and Pappy Joe. I grew more and more in love with him every day.

One day, Mr. Matthews assigned us another partner assignment, and once again Lucas asked to be my partner. I had said yes because I was growing to like the Texan more than as a crush.

------Time Skip------

"So," I said, closing my locker and turning towards Lucas, who was waiting for me. "Off to Topanga's? The sooner we get this done, the better." I needed to go visit Brandin with Evan tonight. Brandin's memory had started to come back enough that he remembered some of the more recent adventures, when he and Evan had first started dating.

“Actually, I was thinking that we could come over to my house,” Lucas said, eyes full of hope.

I thought about it. On one hand, Topanga’s wasn’t that close to the hospital so Lucas’s house could be closer, and it would be nice to have some privacy with Lucas. I wasn’t exactly a huge fan of being in public places, all eyes on us, as they would be if I was with Lucas.

On the other hand, I didn’t know if I was ready to meet his mom. She seemed nice enough from what Lucas told me, but I was still opening up to people beyond Evan, Brandin, and most recently, Maya.

In the end, I decided to bite the bullet. I was growing confidence in my new self and this would only increase it.

“Ok, text me the address.”

“I could do that,” Lucas mused, “or I could just walk with you after school?”

I facepalmed. “Right, duh, we could do that.” I tried to hide my relief. I didn’t know if I could walk over to his apartment alone without chickening out. Plus, I was quickly realizing that anytime spent with Lucas was worthwhile. He was such a good person it started to hurt sometimes.

"K, I'll meet you in front of Mr. Matthew's class after school?"

"Sounds good to me." We bumped fists before we split off, me heading to Math and he to English with the other members of his crew.

After school, I was waiting for Lucas in front of Mr. Matthew's class, listening as I heard Maya and Riley talking to Mr. Matthews, begging to not have to do the assignment.

“Come on, Mr. Matthews,” Maya’s voice said. “We have been so good lately.”

“You literally came into class covered in paint. Again.”

“But daddy, Maya and I both discovered the true meaning of friendship today. We can’t possibly learn anything from this assignment.”

“Oh yeah? What is it?”

“Anything can be solved with enough paint.”

Sometimes I swear I hear a laugh track. Like, how can you not laugh at that?
