It had been 5 years since I joined Ron as Maverick, and things were going well. I had learnt many hacking tips & tricks, but none of them would help me when I was on an assignment to steal a hard drive for Karim. What it contained, I had no clue, but that didn't matter. All that mattered was that we needed it so that CyberCorps didn't have it anymore. It was a cold winter's eve, on January 2nd, 2061, and I had just snuck into a Deli which was, at the time, inhabited by a Superior Guard and 2 troops; 1 normal and 1 armoured .
54R4H had received an anonymous tip that the Superior Guard had the hard drive on them, and ,with a close inspection utilizing a x30 magnification on a security camera, turned out to be true. Luckily for me, Jake had came with me for backup, in case it became necessary. It did. "Jake, I got eyes on the drive, over." I radioed. "Good spot Maverick, now do you see a way to obtain it?" he enquired, "Because I see a plug to the right of the armoured troop, and a screwdriver on your left." I saw it in gave the signal for him to move 1 aisle away from the Guard and their soldiers as they were inspecting the Deli.
Jake remembered our plan, and threw a box of tools over the aisle, leading to the unarmored troop being knocked unconscious. While the other 2 were distracted, I moved discreetly from one side of the lane between the separated aisles to the other, allowing myself to obtain the screwdriver. Together with Jake, I snuck into the aisle that the CyberCorps trio was in at the time, with one still being unconscious.
Utilizing the environment of a frozen food aisle with a heated floor (what can I say, the shop owner was stupid) I slid a packet of ice cubes towards our armoured opponent. I carefully sliced open the previously mentioned plug's wire, & Jake threw it near them, and since the ice melted into water, the liquid soaked into the cables and electrocuted the troop. That left the Superior Guard, who had placed his rifle on his back while he was checking on his comrades. But in that moment I saw his uniform, and I froze.
You see, when CyberCorps introduced the Superior Guards, they were each given a unique uniform/armour. This was so that they weren't confused with their work associates. But when I saw what this one was wearing, it tore me apart inside. It was the same uniform that the Guard who shot my father had worn that night near the CyberWall. And that could only mean one thing. Jake realised this, as he had seen the incident on camera, and tried to snap me out of it.
"Maverick, the hard drive is more important, we don't need to kill anyone" he stated. However, I was done listening. I shoved Jake off of me, and sprinted at the Guard, shoving the screwdriver through his gut and grabbing his rifle, loading it with pure rage in my eyes and revenge on my mind. "MAVERICK, STOP!" belted Jake, "He's not worth it." I lowered the rifle, and ordered the Guard to hand over the drive.
As me and Jake walked away, I remembered that fateful night. I couldn't help myself. I enabled the suppressed rounds and disabled the safety on the rifle, turned around, and fired at the Superior Guard's head. "Why would you do that?!" exclaimed Jake, wrenching the gun out of my hands and breaking it with his knee. I wish now that I hadn't yelled at him, but I vividly remember my response: "You want to know WHY?! HE KILLED MY FATHER! HE TOOK AWAY MY LIFE!! You know what I say to that Guard's death? Good bloody riddance!"
We were silent for the journey back to the hideout, but since Anonymity had access to the cameras in the Deli, they had seen it all. I slid the hard drive across the desk in the conference room, and walked out without a single word. 54R4H went to walk out of the room and follow me, but Ron stopped her, saying to her that "He needs space, Sarah, and we'll give him it."
2 hours later I was on the roof, sitting at the edge, thinking. Not about anything specific, but just simply thinking. I thought I would've been alone up there, but when do I ever get what I want? All I heard was a helicopter in the distance, and the sound of what seemed to be a missile. "Great, CyberCorps are attacking Londinium Central again." I assumed. Oh, how wrong I was.
The sound of something moving rapidly got louder, and by the time I clocked on to what was about to happen, it was too late. I darted my head up and right, only to see an 'Extreme Heat Missile' heading straight for the building that I was on top of. I pressed twice on my radio to Anonymity at a specific speed, meaning 'Danger, Assistance Required!' but as I reached the ladder down to the alleyway, the missile hit the roof to my side, and I was sent flying off of the building. I crashed into 3 fire escape banisters, and landed with a head first collision into a dumpster. The next thing I knew, I had woken up in the Medical Bay in Anonymity's hideout, but there were 2 extremely major issues:
I couldn't see out of my eye, and I couldn't feel my right arm, at all.
