Once I was in the office I quickly got to work. I skimmed over every file from the last 5 years that had mentioned a black pick-up. It felt like at least a 1.000. I put in so much work without any success it seemed. But at least I was prepared in case there were going to be investigations on the matter. When I started at around 8 I didn't stop until past midnight. My eyes hurt like hell and everything in me screamed at me to go to bed but I knew that I couldn't afford that. So I kept working. Next time I checked the time it was past 4 in the morning. I was barely awake at that point. Knowing that staying in the office wouldn't help I decided to just go home and sleep. It was my day off anyways so I could get a few hours in. Shortly after shutting off the PC I was out the front door and walking over to my car which to no one's surprise was one of the only cars in the parking lot. I opened the boot and threw all my things in. I hadn't even started the car yet but I was already about to fall asleep again. Luckily my way home was just 10 minutes. I was glad that I didn't have to drive to New York in that state.
When I parked the car in front of my apartment I couldn't have run to the door any faster. I was convinced that I was hearing my bed call out for me. Not even bothering where my things landed I quickly went into the bathroom to get ready for the long awaited sleep. My head hadn't even hit the pillow before I was fast asleep. I woke up drenched with sweat and absolutely freezing at around 6:30 from a bizarre dream.
Earth was empty except 2 humans. A man and a woman. Everyone else was relocated to a different planet after the moon was destroyed, making earth nearly uninhabitable. The 2 humans remained on earth as a unit that took care of special towers that would somehow bring the water from earth to the other humans. It was one of the weirdest dreams I ever had but it was also kind of beautiful. Fascinating what you can dream in just a few hours. Happy that I could add another few hours to sleeping I did my best to go back into the land of dreams. This time a more realistic scenario.
Sharp and I were standing in the ruins of an old mansion. I wasn't completely sure but to me it looked like the Crook Domicile. From 1923 to 1982 it was used as an orphanage. Before that it belonged to the Crook family. For decades they were one of the richest families in the city. All men without exceptions were medical doctors. The last member of the family, Jonathan Crook, was a special man who unfortunately didn't get to live very long. He died 1922 at the age of 23 from pneumonia. In his last will he gave his home to the city to make good use of it and help those in need. He gave it to them under the condition that it won't be demolished. Without much thought they turned it into an orphanage which it was until they decided to move to a new building. After that was abandoned and left for nature to reconquer. It didn't take very long until the structure started falling apart and soon it was more ruins than mansion. A shadow of the glory it once held.
In my dream Sharp and I found ourselves on the first floor. But we weren't the only people on the property. On the ground floor were other heavily armed people. It was pretty clear that their mission was to kill us. No idea why. Lucky for us we were armed as well. Not as good as our opponents but armed nonetheless. Another advantage of ours was that apparently the other people didn't know our location but we could perfectly see all of them. It was close to dusk and everything was tinted orange. It was soft and subtle. Ignore the armed men and it was easy to thing you were in some kind of post-apocalyptic paradise. It felt untouched and peaceful but very clear that nature held the power over this place. I was lost in thought marvelling over the beauty but was quickly pulled back to earth when Sharp pulled my arm. I was feeling a bit disoriented and he pointed to the fallen over remnants of a low wall. It wasn't much what remained of it but it was enough for us to duck behind. The men below us were splitting up but I managed to count 17 of them. But who knows if that really was all of them. 4 of them went outside, 3 stayed by the door and another 3 went left and right, 2 moved to the back of the house and another 2 made their way over to the staircase leading to the first floor. All of them were armed with machineguns and pistols while Sharp and me both only had a pistol. Some of them also had knives and grenades. The chances of us getting out of this was slim, basically 0. Our only chance was headshots because even though they thought of everything they forgot helmets. Showing Sharp my realisation made him think. It took him a few seconds but when he was done thinking he signed for me to stay where I am while he moved along a bit, hiding behind a pile of stones close to the stairs. The staircase first moved straight away from the entrance and split off to the right and left of the house. Sharp was waiting on the right side while I was waiting by the left. The 2 men that were walking up to the first floor split into the two directions. When the one on Sharps side passed my friend he was quickly pulled to the floor and I could see Ben taking him out silently. When he looked over to me I pointed at a low wall next to the stairs on my side and then to myself. He nodded and I silently moved there. It didn't take very long for the man to reach my position. I let him move along a little further before stepping behind him. I pulled out his knife while holding my hand over his mouth. Then stabbed him in the neck and caught him before silently putting him on the ground. I left his body behind a pillar so he couldn't be seen from the lover level. I then grabbed his weapons and moved back to Sharp where I could see that he had also taken his victims weapons. This upped our chances a bit but not enough to be sure of our victory. But we both agreed that this would be enough to deal with at least some of them. "If we're not under constant fire we might actually stand a chance against them. Short rounds of fire and constantly change places, one time ducking max at every location. Constant movement is fundamental. They mustn't see us. We should probably start with the ones by the door. That will likely draw in the 4 from outside. I know we can take them out quickly of the don't see us. But that requires us to be efficient and silent at the door", I explained my plan to him. He nodded and said: "You go right, I go left. For the beginning we should both chose a position across the door. From there we split when the others come in. you take the ones on my side and I those on yours." "What about those in the back? What are we going to do with them?", I questioned. "we deal with that when we cross that bridge. That has to happen in the moment.", was his short answer. I nodded and we moved to our place across the entrance. Good for us that this wall was still fully intact so we could move back and forth without being seen. When Sharp gave the sign we stood up and took out the 3 men by the door. As expected the team outside was the first to respond. They venerunt, viderunt et cedicederunt (came, saw and fell). They were dead before they could comprehend what had happened. Sharp and I nodded at each other before advancing to the next position. From both the left and the right came 3 men with their guns in position. They entered the lobby area and looked around. Good, that meant they hadn't seen us yet. Sharp realised this too and as if we had telepathically told the other person we stood up and fired the MGs, letting bullets rain down on the 6 men below. We emptied the entire magazines of both MG and pistols meaning that we were out of ammo by the time all 6 of them were dead. That also meant that we were basically unprepared for the remaining men that were still at the back of the house. When they came to check on their teammates I remembered the grenades we took from our first victims. Sharp dared to peak over the wall we were still hiding behind and when I showed him one of the grenades he nodded. We pulled the pins and dropped the grenades one level beneath us. When they made contact with the floor our opponents all turned to look at whatever made that noise. It took another second but then there was the boom.
That bang ripped me from my sleep and I sat up in bed, drenched yet once again. "Christ almighty. What on earth was that?", I mumbled and rubbed my eyes. I decided to get up and make myself some breakfast but when I took a peek at the clock I was close to dying. It was barely 9 am. I wasn't very tired anymore but given that my night only started at 4:40 in the morning it was simply still too early.
