A few months later (12 years old)

"Do they feel comfortable?" The physiotherapist asked Harry after adjusting the final strap on his new KAFO braces.

Harry shrugged his shoulders, not knowing what to say. It wasn't exactly comfy to have his legs squeezed and strapped in those plastic and metal things that reached from the sole of his feet to the bones on his bum, but it wasn't painful either so...

"Okay then. Let's give them a try then. I want you to try and stand up using your arms and then we'll go for some steps" The physio nodded, pushing his wheelchair so that he was facing the parallel bars and giving his shoulder a pat.

Harry scrunched his nose in deep thoughts. The scare of not being able to stand up and walk a few months ago, even if he realised he sometimes still could if the stars aligned, had lead him to the doctor's, who had explained that they could prolong his walk with the help of some kind of braces and a simple surgery to lengthen his achiles tendons to gain ankle movement.

Now here he was, a few weeks after the surgery, with braces on and wide scared eyes, looking at the bars before him.

He looked up and saw his best friend trying to stay still so that they didn't kick him out of the room but was still bouncing on his toes as he grinned back at him.

The first try was just awkward, as were the second and third. He huffesd, getting frustrated. Duchenne didn't just affect his legs but also the rest of his muscles so, how did they expect him to just stand up?

"Hey, hey. C'mon, Harry. One more.
On the count of three you pull hard and I'll give you the final push" The physio encouraged just as he was about to give up.

His eyes widened as he held on to the bars to keep his balance. After a few seconds he bit his lips, realising that his knees wouldn't buckle with the locked braces.

"Well done, Harry! We'll keep working on standing up and balance but for now I'd like for you to try and take some steps with the help of the bars. Just remember that you can't bend your knees so you'll have to shift your weight to one of the legs and use your trunk to pull the other forward"
