Harry knew he could do this. He had done this before. He had everything planned. He had his list on his phone. He had followed and ticked each item one by one. Until he couldn't.
He made it through with meticulous planning, unplanning and replanning. He had made it through packing, unpacking and meticulously repacking. He had made sure everything was perfectly planned. He even made sure to have a backup plan for everything.
He had managed well in the bus. Line 28, because line 11 was late.
He had managed well through security. Even when they pat him down and asked him to lift his shirt a bit for an explosive routine check. He had made it to the correct gate. He had found a quiet corner to wait for boarding. He had his sound cancelling headphones on. He had his magnetic rings to fidget.
Everything had been thought off. Everything was good.
Until it wasn't.It all happened too fast. A sharp sound coming directly from a hidden speaker on his left, announcing that boarding was about to start. "Good afternoon. We are now inviting those passengers with small children, and any passengers requiring special assistance, to begin boarding at this time. Please have your boarding pass and identification ready". He jumped. Startled. One of his fidget rings slipped through his fingers and to the floor. 'Clink'. Four cream coloured paws. A pair of battered black Vans. And he ring was gone. Kicked away by the second shoe.
Harry checked the rings left on his palm. "Red. Orange. Yellow. Green. Mm. Purple. Pink".
He looked to the floor where the ring had first landed. No ring.
He checked them again. "Red. Orange. Yellow. Green. No blue. Purple. Pink"."No blue" He muttered.
He searched for the missing ring under the seats. He searched under people's bags. He searched between people's feet. He searched between cream coloured paws.
"Oi. Don't pat my dog, please. She's working" A man spoke over his bent head.
Harry looked up. "I am not patting the dog". He looked back to the ground. He continued searching under the seat. "No blue, no blue, no blue" He repeated under his breath.
"Well, give us some space, then" The battered Vans' owner huffed, backing up a bit.
"Space is a boundless three-dimensional extent in which objects and events occur and have relative position and direction. I cannot give you space. It is not mine to give" Harry replied without standing up. Still searching. "No blue, no blue, no blue"
"I- what?" The battered Vans' owner laughed.
"I said Space is a boundless three-dimensional extent in which objects and events occur and have relative position and direction. I cannot give you space because it is not mine to give. And then, 'No blue, no blue, no blue" Harry answered quickly.
"Um... Okay, then. Why?" The man asked with confusion.
"Because you asked me to give you space and I cannot give it to you. I gave you an explanation" Harry looked up, still on his knees.
"I- O-okay. That's true, I guess. What are you doing?" The confused lad asked looking above Harry's face.
"I am searching for the blue ring. The voice startled me. I dropped it to the floor. You kicked it away. I cannot find it" The curly haired man replied showing him the rings in his palm.
"Oh, fuck! I'm so sorry. Shit! Was it expensive? I'll help you" The man cursed, not looking at Harry's hand.
"It was not expensive. You curse a lot. You cannot see" Harry resumed his search, now with increasing anxiety.
"Oi! This does not mean I can't help you!" The stranger walked away.
Harry huffed and bit his lip to hold in a sob. He knew it was time to board the plane. He knew the ring could be replaced. The logic thing to do was to leave it. He still had red, orange, yellow, green, purple and pink but the rainbow was not complete without blue. He could not board without it. He needed to find the blue one. Fast.
