Chapter 9

"Status." Argo gruffed out, his sudden appearance making his eldest daughters jump with Canis even falling off the branch she was sitting on. She landed on her back with a harsh grunt, her clenched eyes fluttering open to see her father staring down at her with narrowed bright blue eyes.

"Jeez, pop. Give us a heads-up, eh?" Canis grumbled as she began to pick herself up. Argo's eyes seemed to narrow further before he hauled his eldest child up and onto her feet. Canis rolled her shoulders back while Lupus looked back towards the cabin.

"Status." Argo repeated, his tone stern and blunt. Lupus let out a soft rumble as she crossed her arms against her chest, Canis resting her hands on her hips while standing beside their sire.

"Well it seems like the human's finally taken notice of Marley's mating attempts." Canis answered as she and Argo peered through the foliage and through the cabin's kitchen window. Argo's eyes narrowed as he took notice of the human, the blonde seemed to be cooking something before his gaze went towards his youngest when she entered the room the human was in.

His eyes were hard, his jaw tensed as he watched Marley move towards the human. Marley pressed herself against the blonde's side and nuzzled into her neck, the human's hands moving whatever she was cooking to the side before turning towards Marley. His pup smiled up at the human and he smothered down a growl when the human tilted her head down, Marley's hand resting on the sides of the blonde's neck as they kissed.

"Hmph." He grumbled before turning around and beginning to walk back into the woods.

"Pop?" Canis called out.

"Continue your observations."

"Fine..." Lupus grumbled with a pout, her back slouching as Argo walked away and disappeared into the thick forestry. Canis lifted herself back up onto the banch and crouched beside her twin, her nose wrinkling up when she saw Marley pin her human against a large metallic rectangle.

The one of the young werewolf's hands lowering itself towards the human's pants.

"Oh, gross."

"I really don't need to see Marles and the human mate." Canis grumbled.

"You and me both. Wanna find a caribou?" Lupus agreed and received a nod from her twin. The both of them hopped off the branch, shifting as they fell, before taking off into a harsh sprint to get as far away from the isolated cabin as possible.

"I don't trust the human." Argo spoke, his voice quiet as he knelt in the grass.  The long blades of green brushed against his bare legs, his clenched fists resting atop of his thighs.

The wind blew softly around him, the meadow he knelt in the center being near deathly quiet. The grass blades swayed, Argo's chest expanded as he took a deep breath.

His bones made a slight creaking noise as his fists clenched even tighter.

"She's a hunter. She's dangerous, I know she is." He growled, his eyes slipping closed as his fangs lengthened. A growl left him, his jaw bunched up tight before he released a wary sigh. The wind blew a bit more harsher, his eyelids fluttering open.

He took notice of the dozens of dandelion pappuses that floated with the breeze. He slowly, hesitantly stretched a hand out towards them and watching as they weaved through the gaps between his fingers.

"But I will try, Lucy. Because you would try for our pup. So, for Marley...I will accept her human mate...I will try." He whispered, his russet red hair being ruffled as he tilted his head back to stare at the clear sky.

"I miss you, beloved."

"What're you doing?" Jace murmured with a soft chuckle, Marley letting out a rumble as she continued to nuzzle against the human's neck.

"Scenting you." The wolf answered, her tongue poking out to gently swipe across a white scar. She felt Jace's throat vibrate with a pleased hum before feeling the human's scarred hand run through her hair.

Jace's other hand moved her thumb to hold her place of the book she was reading, resting it against the arm of the couch. She tilted her head down to gaze at Marley, the redhead pressing herself a bit harder against the human.

"For?"

"To make sure others know we're together. I ain't letting anybody try and snatch you up behind my back." Marley continued her nuzzling; a content, echoing rumble leaving her when she felt Jace's lips brush against her hair. One of her hands laid itself flat on Jace's abdomen and nuzzled itself underneath a soft wool cream sweater to trace the dozens of scars, small and large, that littered the expanse of skin.

"We're in the middle of the woods, Marles. I doubt you have any competition for my affection." Jace hummed against russet-red hair. The two of them fell back into a calming silence, Jace swinging her book back open while her other hand continued its gentle strokes through Marley's hair.

The only noise in the isolated cabin being the crackling and slow yet steady burning of crudely-chopped logs in the fireplace and the soothing rumbles that vibrated through Marley.

Jace taken comfort in the gentle sounds as her eyes lazily roamed over bold black text. Her nose took in the scent of soft pine and cedar, her eyelids beginning to slowly flutter shut as the sandman worked his magic.

Her book thumped dully onto the floor. The human's head tilted back a bit while weak puffs of air periodically were felt against her neck as the wolf snored beside her.
