Junior year. This year is going to be quite different.
Luckily since my breakup with Nico things have not been weird with the group. Yeah, sure no more 'IT' couple or power couple of Blackview Academy, but this year isn't about anyone else but me. It's my time to enjoy the single life.
"Bro did you guys see how Sage was all over Nico at the end of summer party?" Levi asks, sitting in the backseat of my car.
"She did not waste any time trying to get with him. I heard the same week you guys broke up she dmed him. I still don't get how you were so cool about it Collins" Saylor says with a questioning expression.
"What do you mean? Why would I not be cool with it? Me and Nico are still friends, and we broke up months ago" I say as I drive us to school.
Levi and Saylor are my best friends. They are my ride or die. I have known Saylor since I was five. And ever since Levi moved here in the 4th grade, we three have been inseparable. I know that they will always have my back.
"Yeah, but you guys were together for over a year. And I mean you were THE couple at Blackview. Every girl either wanted to be you or wanted to fuck Nico. And vice versa with the guys" Saylor says.
"Well now they can" I chuckle. "Listen, Nico and I had a great time together. He is a nice guy and I have known him for so long, but it just wasn't working for me anymore and I didn't want to just string him along for some irrelevant title of 'it couple' of Blackview. And we are still friends. There is no bad blood between us. So Nico can hook up with whoever he wants"
"Damn I wish my exes were as chill as you" Levi responds.
"Well maybe if you stop dating girls that are lowkey psychopaths and obsessed with you then you might have some luck"
"True, but I like them a little unstable. Makes it interesting. And usually the se-" Levi smirks as he tries to finish his sentence.
"Oh god please do not finish that sentence. It is too early" Saylor interrupts before Levi could give any details that would be burned into our memories.
"When did you turn into a prude Saylor" Levi scoffs.
"Yeah, I'm with Saylor on this one Levi. Let's maybe not hear about your sex life at 7am." I chuckle.
As we started to walk into school, I could feel the eyes on me. It is the first time in a year that I haven't walked into school with Nico. But I continue to walk with all my confidence. As per usual Saylor and Levi have basically every class together and I was left on my own. But I actually like it.
I mean don't get me wrong I love my friends and would spend every minute with them, but I want a challenge. I am taking almost all AP classes this year and Levi and Saylor were not on board with my plan. When the bell rang, I went my separate way from my friends and headed to AP Bio. Science isn't my favorite, but Mrs. Erickson is one of my favorite teachers at this school.
As I enter the class, I walk to sit at the lab table in the back left corner near the window, my favorite spot. I thought I was going to be one of the first ones in class, but someone beat me to it. I don't recognize her, she must be new because I know everyone at this school.
I walk closer to get the seat next to her, but as I approach, she turns around and I am in awe. Wow, she is so beautiful. I stay standing frozen in front of her as I capture every detail of her face. It felt as if time had slowed down.
She has the most beautiful blue eyes. Ones to make you think of the ocean, but prettier. They are mesmerizing. Her hair is straight blonde and parted in the middle, falling on the sides of her face. And her face, oh her face. It looks so soft and light. Her freckles complement her so well.
She is wearing the school white polo, plaid skirt, black cardigan, and classic hightop converse. Without realization, my eyes soon fell onto her lips. They are a light rose shade and look so soft. It is only when I see that they begin to move that I snap out of the daze I am in.
"Wait sorry what?" I ask, confused.
"I asked if I was sitting in your seat"
"Oh, um yeah, I mean no..." I stutter trying to quickly respond.
"Um, so do you want me to move?"
"No, it is totally fine, you keep it. It is the best spot. Is it okay if I sit here though?" I ask, pointing to the spot next to her.
"Yeah, for sure"
I sit down trying not to make a bigger fool out of myself. "Hi, I'm Collins" I introduce myself.
"Hi, I'm Riven"
"Wow, that is a really cool name. I've never heard it before" I smile.
"Thank you" she smiles back.
"Are you new here? I don't recall ever seeing you around?"
"Yeah I am. I just transferred here from Milton Prep"
"Wait, you went to Milton Prep? Why did you transfer here so far away?"
Milton Prep is about 2 hours away from us on a good day. I recognize the school because we have played them multiple times during playoffs for state. They are sort of our rivals. We always end up playing them.
I notice her expression change when I ask her my question. The smile on her face begins to disappear.
"Oh you don't have to answer if you don't want to" I quickly respond.
"Um it's just a long and personal story, but I am mainly here to play soccer. They offered me a full scholarship"
"Oh, shit so you must be really good then. What position do you play?" I ask even though I have no idea about anything soccer related.
Thoughts of all the positions I wanted to see her in came crashing in. I quickly snap out of it as I hear a loud voice enter the classroom. Unfortunately.
"Good morning students! I hope everyone had a great summer!" Mrs. Erickson expresses as she walks to the front of the classroom. "Before we begin, I would like to introduce everyone to our new student. Ms. Dagger, can you please stand up and introduce yourself and tell us something about yourself" she motions for Riven to stand up.
"Um, hello, my name is Riven. I am from Blue Hill and I like to play soccer" Riven spoke with a softness to her voice.
"Well, I hope that you have a great first day and that you feel welcomed. Thank you, Ms. Dagger. Now students, to begin today's lesson we will be taking a short pop quiz to see where everyone is on their biology studies'' Mrs. Erikson explains.
The entire class groans as she passes the quizzes. But I am too focused on Riven to care. Why is she so enchanting to me? More importantly, why have I never gotten this feeling before? No guy or girl has ever caught my attention like this.
I feel like I am really nervous. But it wasn't for the quiz. I don't get nervous, like ever. So why am I feeling like this? Because of Riven?!
