The 2022 Country Music
Hall of Fame Medallion Ceremony

We are pleased to announce that the Country Music Hall of Fame's members have decided that the recipient of this year's modern-era artist award will be a posthumous one, for that of Opal Starr. Since she made her explosion of an arrival on the music scene in 1996, the world of country music was ever changed - whether by her incredible vocal and musical talents, powerful and unique lyrics, or her genuine kindness and honesty in the face of terrible disease. Tonight, we welcome her husband Guy, and her two children, Genevieve and Sawyer, to accept this medallion in her honor, and for her music and artistry to forever be protected here in the Hall of Fame.

- Reba McEntire, CMHOF announcer

My wife, Opal, was a very special and frankly unique case in the world of country music. As a teenager in the late 1990s, she spent her days busking on the streets of Nashville, pushing to make ends meet for her struggling family. She knew love and loss and pain far too young, but that is what enabled her success.
It wasn't long into her career that we found out she was HIV positive. The most innocent, kind young girl, knowing her life would be taken by something so stigmatized. She set out to change that.
Today, her foundation runs a homeless shelter here in the city, right behind Bridgestone Arena, the corner she once played on, along with facilities for confidential STD and STI testing. And though she is no longer with us, she lives on through the work of her foundations, those she touched in her short life, and of course, her music.
If she could be standing on this stage today, she would want to sing for you - she would want the opportunity to please you all and prove herself to everybody here. And I would gently remind her that she didn't need to, as you all selected her already based on her merits and importance to the industry.
Thank you for this award. For her. For always.
