Walking into the Christmas party, panic rushed through you. You hadn't planned on any surprises over the course of the night, which made spotting your ex-boyfriend all the more shocking.

In a panicked effort to avoid him, you searched the room for anyone that you knew. You let out an audible cheer as you caught sight of Duff, in the corner pouring himself a drink.

"Duff!," you screamed out, getting his attention in the sea of people around you. His green eyes followed the sound of your voice before he caught sight of you running up to him.

"Oh, hey you," he smiled, happy to see you.

"Duff, I need you to pretend to be my boyfriend!," you explained hastily, looking around for any sign of your ex-boyfriend. Duff looked at you confused for a moment before he looked around, spotting him before you did. He scoffed, making you turn back to him.

"Who invited that asshole?," he said, nodding his head in his direction. You squeezed your eyes shut, cursing yourself for being so overwhelmed.

"Please Duff. I really can't do this with him tonight," you said, watching as Duff sent an evil glare his way. He took a sip of his drink before throwing an arm across your shoulders.

"Don't worry about him, I got this," he said, flashing you a smile. You let out a breath, as the two of you walked off to find the rest of the guys.

A few hours later, you stood alone, grabbing two more drinks for you and Duff when you heard a voice from behind you.

"Y/n?," the voice sounded, making you stand frozen in place. You closed your eyes, cursing under your breath as you recognized exactly who the voice belonged to.

"Hey," you said, turning around to face your ex-boyfriend. You shot him a fake smile, hopeful that maybe he would just leave you alone this time.

"You look good," he said, taking a step closer to you. Your grip on the counter tightened as you bit back the urge to tell him off and cause a scene. Before you could though, you felt an arm snake around your waist.

"Doesn't she always?," Duff asked, as he stared down at your ex-boyfriend. He wore a confused expression, as his eyes shot between you both. "Everything good babe? Who's this?," he asked, gesturing towards him. You went to speak up, but before you could, your ex-boyfriend cut you off.

"Oh, uh. I was just leaving," he said before walking away awkwardly to leave you and Duff standing there. You both watched after him as he left, you letting out a breath you didn't know you were holding. You blushed at the close proximity between you and Duff as you touched his hand that was on your waist. He turned back to you, seemingly snapping out of a trance.

"Thank you Duff. You really saved me tonight," you expressed, relieved that everything had worked out. He nodded his head, offering you a weak smile.

"What's wrong?," you asked, noticing the troubled look on his face. He didn't say anything, but looked into your eyes. You grew shy under his gaze, noticing the way he searched your face, as if a million things were running through his mind that he just couldn't express.

Suddenly, he placed a hand on your cheek and connected his lips to yours. You felt shocked at first, but within a few seconds, you were kissing him back, feeling a wave of pure bliss wash over you for the first time that night. When he pulled away, he looked at you again, this time with a more content expression.

"What was that for?," you asked. A small smile tugged at your lips as he chuckled at your question.

"Two reasons actually," he started, running a hand through his hair. "The first is because...Being with you tonight made me realize a lot. And seeing your ex talking to you finally gave me the courage to do what I've been meaning to do for a really long time," he said, making a grin form on your face.

"And the second reason?," you asked, watching as a playful smirk crept up on his face. He waited a few seconds before nodding towards the ceiling. You looked up to see mistletoe, strategically placed above you too. You couldn't help but laugh, making him do the same.

"Well played McKagan. Well played...," you let out. You reached for his hand, intertwining your fingers together, making him smile as well.

"C'mon. Let's go tell the guys that our plan just became the real thing," you said, kissing his cheek and leading him off to spend the rest of the Christmas party together.
