The floor boards creaked with each step taken cautiously into the abandoned house. The family that once resided closely in these halls long gone leaving echos of their past.
You had your phone out, flash light on, but even though it was a bright light that stretched far beyond you and Freddy it didn't feel like it was enough. The darkness of the night added to the magnitude of the shadows all around.
"You seem tense." Freddy whispered. He seemed just as timid though only his voice displayed that.
"I've never actually been able to investigate anything like this." You muttered back just as softly.
"I've heard about how these things go. But experiencing and hearing about it feel like two separate things."Freddy hummed his piercing gaze almost glowing in the darkness.
"I suppose I should have guessed that." Freddy grinned despite how low he was talking.
"The thrill of detective work is a high worth chasing. I think it must be fascinating, with all the twisted cases certain places must get."You glanced back at Freddy curiously. Well he already proved himself to be a man who knew a lot about a bunch of different things. He was very knowledgeable it shouldn't surprise you that he thinks detective work is fascinating.
"Though," Freddy leaned down purposely close to you, "I think you're far more fascinating than any of that. I've never seen nor met anyone quite like you. I've seen a lot in my travels."
You were half paying attention to his whispered words, half paying attention to the hot breath that ran across your ear with each word uttered. Instead you were focused on noise at the end of the hallway. A faint light illuminated the corners, just out of reach from your own. You quickly lifted a finger to your lips hastily shushing Freddy.
Freddy leaned back, a disappointment in his eyes that went unread as you motioned towards the end of the hallway. He followed your gaze and nodded in understanding. (He guessed he'd flirt with you more later. Not that you'd notice. That's part of why he likes you so much. You don't fawn over him like the other women, or men, did. A challenge.)
You walked closer to the wall, turning your light off, carefully avoiding what you assumed to be loud planks of wood. You knew the more settled parts of the house would be at the sides. Freddy followed your lead, creeping down the hall with the same precision as you were.
The noise was getting louder. More distinct. You could make out the voice of a man and woman. They sounded still distant but their argument wasn't hard to pick up on. Now what was being said was hard to tell. The noise got closer the more you two went. Until finally you reached the corner.
Your eyes adjusted partially to the darkness. Able to pick out that the wood turned to carpet here, old 1980's carpet. There was a couch, a chair, a table and a tv. (Everything was outdated. Even the clock on the wall, which reminded you of a star with its spikes and golden color.)
Shoulders relaxing you walked fully into the room frowning when you realized the noise was coming from the tv. A sitcom was playing still on the tv, a comedy about a vampire avoiding his ex who wanted him to pay child care. It seemed very outdated and the jokes didn't land like they should have.
"Who would watch this?" The words left your mouth before you could register what you just said.
"Apparently your rat does." Freddy walked fully into the room trying a light switch sighing when it didn't work. It was clear something was busted with the light in this room.
"Thinking of vampires though, did you know that Dracula was based off a real man? Prince Vlad Tepes, or as history knows him Vlad the impaler. A nickname like that of course comes with reason, he's said to have impaled over 20,000 people. And if that wasn't enough he wasn't afraid to use other tactics like boiling someone's skin off."
