"Nicole.."

"I don't want to talk, Matt."

"It's for your safety. I care about you and I really want you to stay and have me protect you but...what If I fail? Just like my dad said. What If what happened to my mom happens to you? I can't have that happen. I don't want any risks. They don't know where you live and your brother and dad will be there to protect you if they find out, "

What does he mean? He can do better protecting me than my brother and my father combined.

"They've protected you for 17 years now."

Matt pulls into my driveway and I hurry and grab my bag and try to run as fast as I can inside but Matt grabs my arm and spins me around to where I'm facing him.

"Nicole, please understand that I'm trying to protect you. I don't know what I would do if you got hurt." He says looking into my eyes with sadness. He gives me a tight hug and he doesn't let go until I push him away.

"Bye Matt."

"Ni-"

I turn around and walk to my front door and I can tell that he hasn't moved a muscle and he's watching me while I bend down to get the key from under the mat. I unlock the door but after I put one foot in Matt calls out to me.

"You should find a better hiding spot for that key. I don't want anybody to find it and break in."

I nod my head and put the key in my pocket.

"Bye Nicole." He looks at me for awhile longer with a frown on his face and he slowly turns around and makes his way to his car. I watch him as he leaves and then when he's out of sight I put my key right back under the mat and walk inside. Home sweet home.
