Maybe it's an habit for Jamaicans to get up really early when they're traveling across the island. Like school trips and such, it's always that way and it left a great thrill in me. Daddy had came to spend the weekend with mama so Stephen and I were up putting the last luggages in the jeep for our travel.
Two to three weeks without Mama would felt unrealistic and had me worried, minus that, I was happy to see Kingston.
We got to Montego Bay, Catherine hall around 5 AM since my mother with her stubborn self needed to see me. Or meet Stephen last minute.
"Yes, mummy. Wih deh at the first roundabout by mega mart. A yuh just come outta the lane?" I had put the call on speaker phone.
"No a mih shadow. What yuh still doing down there, drive come up yah and come inna the lane." She ordered and I rolled my eyes as Stephen chuckled.
He did what mummy wanted and we got out to see the woman surrounded by a cloud of smoke, definitely weed. "Good morning, Miss Pryce."
She smiled at him while returning the greeting, admiring him underneath the small light shining from her house and the others.
My mother is originally from Catherine hall, having family around the area and she met daddy in the area when he started working at water commission. It has been years and they were together until they brought a property here and build it tall enough to rent the upstairs apartments. However, she inherited her parents place and this is it, the house she is fixing up to put on rent. I wasn't close with her parents as a reason I barely remember where their house was but the main reason was because they had a thing for pets. They loved dogs and I was always terrified of them. Mainly theirs as they ran after me a couple of times. It's why I never come this way and avoided it at all cost. Mummy had to more than assure me that the dogs had died, I got proof so here I am. In a dog free lane.
"But jeezam, a weh yuh get this yah man from." Mummy turned to me at last and grinned. "Outta Vogue magazine?"'
"Mummy." I groaned and she laughed. Her voice ran through the area, threatening to wake her surrounding neighbors.
"Mih little baby grow up." She smiled then point to the veranda. "The items are there. Yuh can collect the rest when yuh coming back. Here is the keys."
Mommy went the the US and return some days ago. As always, she just traveled to sent thing down here in Jamaica for us. I took the keys and she helped Stephen and I to put the items in the jeep.
On the veranda were around five barrels and I know for a fact that more where inside. "Yuh get a shipping container too, mummy?"
"Of course, yuh aunty marry a rich man and she a mek sure we good down here in case she needs to move on to the forth husband." Her statement made Stephen choke on saliva and mummy laughed for the better. "Don't mind me, Stephen. Yuh will get use to me. One days you'll see why Kitty run left Bay gone a country."
"Mummy." I frowned and she playfully slaps me on the arm then bids us goodbye.
Pulling out of Catherine hall, Stephen was still laughing then he touched my thigh. "You're the exact replica of your mother, even the voice. So tell me why you really moved to the country side?"
"I use to talk to this scammer guy during high school. I went to Mount Alverna high, the all girl's school here and he went across the road at Cornwall college. However, I use to live further down the street to the left of the roundabout and the guy lives all the way over on West green. Mummy might look sweet and cheerful but that's because all her kids are grown up now. The guy was in a gang and due to some mix up with scamming papers and such, a shootout happen and he got shot. I'm friendly at heart and I would turn a blind eye when he's flirting with me, still I made a joke about wanting to be a nurse and he took that to heart. He ran in our house that big Sunday night bloody and I fainted when I saw so much blood. Mummy ended up helping him but he had to leave because daddy permitted it. That night, they packed my things and sent me to Grandma the next day. Big Monday morning when I had school. All my things weren't placked as they were planning on me staying for a small while but I was scared so I was leaving for good. When I left, they split their common law marriage that is still on to this day, but they do their own thing. It's like they were waiting on me to leave the nest so they could be free. However, I had to get a transfer before I could finish doing upper six. I didn't want to be a teacher but due to links through Mama, I accepted the help to go to college and teach at the basic school."
