Chapter Eight: I Run To the Sunset
When Eren woke up a few hours later, the first thing he thought of was Levi killing someone. He looked around the room he was in; it looked somewhat of a hospital suite.
"Ah!" A woman with glasses cheered. "Alas, you're awake!"
"Where.. where am I..?" Eren groaned feeling a pain in his chest. He remembered as soon as he looked down that he had been shot.
"You're in Rose Manor, cutie!" She grinned and tightened her ponytail. "Let me get a look at your wound."
"N-no.. who even are you?" Eren tried to sit up but hissed when the pain got worse. He gave up and lay back down, letting his body go numb.
"I'm a friend of Levi's." The woman skipped around Eren's bed and lifted up his blanket to get a better look at the blood stained bandage. "My name is Hange. Hange Zoë."
"Well let me go." Eren insisted with a harsh tone. "I don't feel safe here and I don't want to hear from Levi again. Ever."
"Hm." Hange hummed while pulling out a new wrap from the drawer. "Why's that?"
"Because he's a murderer." Eren growled. Hange tensed and looked behind her towards him.
"Eren, you don't know what you're talking about, sweetie." She pulled out a pair of scissors and set them down on the metal table next to Eren's bed. "Sit up please."
At first Eren didn't want to listen, but then he thought about how his wound could get infected from the old wrapping bandage. He managed to painfully sit up and he got a better look at the woman.
She was actually very pretty despite her messy hair — that made her look a little crazy in addition to her creepy smile.
Hange pulled on some gloves before unwrapping the bandage around Erens waist. Then, she unrolled a necessary amount before cutting it apart from the rest of the roll. She wrapped it around Eren and smiled. "All done, kiddo!"
"I'm not a kid." Eren murmured. Hange playfully rolled her eyes while she put her supplies away. "When can I go home?"
"I-"
"After I talk to you."
"Well you can't keep me here forever and I'm not going to talk to you." Erens heart began to race once he saw Levi standing there in the doorway. He scared Eren.
"You already did, might as well continue." Levi walked fully into the room and Hange walked fully out of the room.
"Why?" Eren sarcastically laughed. "So you can lie to me some more? Trust me, you've obviously done that plenty."
"I did that to protect you." Levi said, slightly raising his voice. Eren wasn't going to back down now, however.
"Protect me? Protect me from what?" Eren's eyes were wide with anger. He could feel the frustration pulse through his veins with every breath.
"From people. What do you think someone would do if they found out you knew me and who I was, huh? You think they'd invite you over for a glass of wine and some fucking cheese?"
Eren bit his lip taking in Levi's words. He'd never raised his voice at Eren before.
"No- no they wouldn't. They'd hold a gun to your head and demand you tell them everything you know. And who's to say that just for the fun of it, they wouldn't kill you after?"
"Well you know what?" Eren bickered. "Maybe you shouldn't have ever interfered with my life."
Levi went quiet. He was right, he put Eren in a dangerous position. Eren got shot because of him.
"I'm leaving." Eren winced while he climbed out of the bed and stood barefoot on the cold tile floor. "I'll call an Uber, don't even think about offering to take me home."
Levi nodded and watched the younger male walk away. He definitely needed some clothes before getting in any Uber but Levi didn't want to get in his way again.
—
Eren ended up getting his clothes from Hange before heading out to his Uber.
He needed to clear his head. What better way was there on a Thursday evening than watching the sunset.
"Are you sure this is where you want to be dropped off?" The Uber asked Eren. Eren nodded.
"Yeah, this is perfect. Thank you." He pulled out a fifty and handed it to the driver.
He walked across the crunchy grass, through the rotting wooden doors, and up the ladder to stop in front of a giant hole in the wall. The barn that stored so many great memories was now being used to clear those specific memories from his mind.
"You like me." Eren said. "Real or fake?"
"Real."
Eren sighed and turned around to the man behind him. "So, i take it you're not a mechanic then?"
Levi nodded.
"Then what are you- and if you're not honest, so help me God I will never even look at you again."
"I run a mob." Levi answered plainly. Eren took in a deep breath and held it for a moment.
"Alright." He said after exhaling. "You moved here from France. Real or fake?"
"Real." Levi answered. Eren nodded and crossed his arms. He was beyond frustrated with the man five meet in front of him.
"And that's because your Uncle got a job offer?"
Levi shook his head. "I ran away."
"All the way to America?" Eren almost didn't believe him. If Levi had been honest about anything, he would have ran away when he was only a teenager.
Again, Levi nodded. He walked closer to Eren and sat down beside him. For a moment, Eren wanted to forgive him. He wanted to forgive him for lying and for killing people, but he couldn't. Not yet at least.
"Why?" Eren asked feeling tears in his eyes. "Why do you kill all those people?"
"I got into some bad things when I moved into America." Levi explained. He knew he had messed up and might not ever be able to fix things with Eren. "But this isn't something you can just get out of whenever you want. Trust me, Eren, if I could, I would."
"But you kill people, Levi!" Eren cried. "You kill people who might have families waiting for them to come sit down at the dinner table!"
"You think I want this, Eren?" Levi rhetorically asked. "These people know what they're getting themselves into when they steal from me or kill someone I have to protect. They know what they're doing and are asking to be killed."
"Nobody deserves death."
"These are bad people, Eren. I don't kill random people on the street whenever I feel like it, but if someone is doing something bad to me or someone in my gang, I have no choice."
"Give me one good reason why I shouldn't leave right now." Eren looked Levi straight in the eye. He noticed Levi's eyes weren't as happy as they usually looked when the two were together and it was obvious why. He felt bad for having to do this, but for once, he needed to put himself first.
"I can't give you that." Levi said, his head falling in shame. "All I can tell you is that I have never felt like this for anyone and never will again." He didn't need to think about what to say, his heart directed the words straight out of his mouth in seconds. "Two months ago, I didn't even know you, but now it feels like I don't remember not knowing you. And I'm still the same guy you went on those dates with and sat by while you watched the sunset. That was all real ,but if you feel like you need to go, do it. I won't stop you."
That little speech reminded Eren of why he was still here. He felt the same way if not more for Levi, he wasn't ready to move on. Unlike anyone before, Levi could so easily turn Eren's heart into his bitch and he already had.
