Deep in a slumber, I laid alone in my bed. It was a smaller mattress from what I regularly slept in, a big difference in matting and material. But it was comfortable nonetheless, a heater silently whirring outside my door and my covers heavily keeping me warm. And while it snowed outside my window, I could rest in comfort that I wouldn’t need to worry about survival anymore. Because here, in this new world, in my apartment, I learned to make it alone after just a few years ago.

Knock Knock.

There was a knock on my bedroom door.

“Sister, there is someone at the front door.”

There was my older brother, knocking on my bedroom door about someone being on our front door.

I sit up from my bed.

‘Who could be bothering me at this hour?’

Sleep and tiredness had easily left my body the first second I was interrupted from my slumber— a habit I have yet to break —but the warmth from my covers almost tempted me to stay in bed. I got up anyway. My feet tread softly against the wooden floor, a soft carpet of my colored preference right in front of my small wardrobe. I open the hinge with a creak, grabbing the bathrobe from off the wooden hinge and draping it around myself. The task was minimal, practically useless, but it left a soft kind of satisfaction within me. It left me feeling elegant once I opened my bedroom door, not caring how else my complexion and hair looked to the eyes of my brother.

Said brother did not wear a bathrobe for once but instead sported a huge gray sweater. How fitting.

“Did you check who it was?” I asked, sparing my brother a glance while passing through the small yet immensely dark hallway. A very dark hallway to the perspective of a human, but given I was not from this world, I could see just fine. My brother followed closely behind, shaking his head from what I could tell.

“No…You said it wouldn’t be safe to open the door this early of…’morning.’ But the knocking wouldn’t stop.”

I shrugged with no further reaction. That was fine, after all, this was my brother’s first time spending a longer time away from home. It was left unasked if he wanted to stay or go back home, it wasn’t really my choice to make. I was good here, I didn’t mind sharing my space or being left alone. It simply left me with different outcomes for me to choose through once someone else made their own decision. Like spending more time with said roommate or spending more time away from my living quarters if I was left alone.

“That’s alright. I’ll simply check through the peephole.” I reassured. I adjusted my colored hair out of my face and carefully faced the front door. And as expected, the knocking was consistent. Hurried knocks and impatience, yet no yelling coming through. Before I checked through, I turned to face my brother and corrected, “oh and— it's said in this case as ‘in the morning’. Not ‘of morning’.”

From the corner of my eye I could see my brother nod in response before I eyed through the peephole. Three figures, one shorter than the last two. The smallest was behind the two tallest, looking oddly worried while checking their surroundings. The two tallest crowded against the door, continuing to knock and knock and knock—
