CARMEN WAS NUMB. Numb to pain and numb to emotions. However, she needed none of them, not after they decided she was worth it. No pain, meant no fear, and no fear meant she was the governments greatest weapon. An assassin who wouldn't cower or yield like the incompetent soldiers on the field, instead, she would flourish in conditions that normally rendered ordinary people petrified.
So after discovering the girl who didn't feel pain, they took her, trained her, and tainted her hands with the blood of innocent people. Yet, even with a sense that what she was doing was wrong, she remained numb. After all, ignorance is bliss, and she'd earned what little peace she scavenged.
"Girl." Djel Sanners, a high ranking MP caught her attention, refusing to use her name out of spite.
"Sanners." She greeted, without turning to look at the man who'd walked into her room, alternatively, she looked outside her barred window, her room practically being a decorative prison.
"God, you are a freak." The MP scoffed. "Maybe if you didn't have the personality of a damn doll, you'd be able to have friends." He insulted.
Maybe if she wasn't locked away and concealed from the world, she'd have a greater chance of fulfilling that goal. Alas, that was not the case. Carmen knew why he was here, the government officials never directly approached her, instead, they'd always send an MP, that way, the connection between them and the assassin was minimal. Not like she'd ever get caught. She'd been trained far too well.
"What's the objective?" She asked, ignoring his comment, causing him to almost laugh, he could throw any insult at her and she'd toss it aside like it was nothing, which it was. Nothing but a distraction.
"The scouts." He initiated. "Rumour has it, they're not entirely useless anymore, now, we can't have that, can we?" Djel walked by her side, observing the stoic expression she held.
"And why is that." The blonde questioned, though she didn't display any signs of confusion.
"Because, they might find out something that they shouldn't, and if that knowledge comes to light, life in the walls will be chaos. So if a panic is created, what could happen to loyal people like us? Who will die when they revolt?" He tried to tug on fear.
"Who am I required to kill." Her next question, it was always the same. Stalk, torture, kill. The cycle never changed.
"A new crucial member of the scouts. I hear he's the strongest alive, he's been around for a year and already has the most titan kills in history." Djel explained.
"Usually, people are happy when titans are killed, so why is this different?"
"Because Erwin Smith is becoming more ambitious, he's making greater strides because of this unkillable scout." He replied, Carmen nodded, she knew what had to be done.
"And I need to kill the unkillable." Carmen stated.
"So you do have a mind of your own?" Djel mocked. "Yes, but this isn't a simple in and out mission. This may take years."
Now Carmen was intrigued. Years free from her prison was definitely worth killing for, so it was an easy agreement, even if she technically had no choice. Besides, she didn't expect her foe to be any different than the others, regardless if he was a scout or not, because everything he could do, she could do better. He could use ODM gear, so could she. He could wield swords, so could she. Even when it came down to fighting, she knew she would be better than this man, because her whole life had been dedicated to thriving.
"Your first objective is to go through the training corps. You will excel in all aspects of it, and you will place first out of all others there." He ordered. "Then, you'll chose the scout regiment, people will automatically see your potential because the top soldier joined them instead of the MPs, they'll see something in you, and assume it's passion. Ignorant to the fact that it's bloodlust. Next, you should attempt contact, secretly looking for a perfect opportunity to kill. When the time is right, you do it. Return back here when it's done."
"You say it may take years, from what I understand, I could easily break in. So why take this approach?" She wondered, rightfully so, why should she spend all her time revising skills she'd already mastered.
"Clearly, you need to learn when to shut your trap, this isn't your decision brat." The man spat, as a result, Carmen stayed quiet. She could easily beat him to a pulp, if she did that, she'd be free, but if that were to happen, then what would her purpose be? Would her existence be worthless? "We might as well have a mole in the scouts while your stalking your prey. You leave tomorrow, pack essentials for cadet training. And don't forget, place first."
With that, he left. The instructions had been given, all that was left for her to do was follow them until the next instructions arrived. The only thing that validated her existence was staying in the cycle, following every order and killing anything that got in her way. However, it didn't take a toll on her, and she received better living conditions than some, so why complain?
"Don't worry Levi, it'll be a while before I kill you. Use your time wisely." The girl muttered, staring out of her window like previous, numb like a doll.
