Stay Alive Season 2: City of the Dead [Book 2]

Jang-Shin POV
I strode toward the Spanish military personnel, addressing them in Spanish, "What's going on?" Their faces contorted into a furious grimace as they turned to me.

One of them, seething with anger, replied in Spanish, "Your friend turned into a zombie." He smirked at me, his eyes glinting with malice.

"Impossible," I retorted, shaking my head. "They're fine." This Spanish jerk was always making up wild stories.

"If you don't believe me, go see for yourself," he challenged. His words made me hesitate. Should I go?

A few minutes later, I stood in the laboratory, my stomach churning at the sight before me. Blood splattered the walls, floors, and broken lights. What in the hell had happened here?

Suddenly, a hand clamped down on my shoulder. I whipped around to see Jong Se-hyung.

"What the hell are you doing here?" he whispered, pulling me down behind a desk and grabbing my wrist.

"Well, the Spanish military guy said... It's a long story," I said, trying to explain. He just glared at me, his face tense.

We heard the door slam shut. Wait, did that Spanish military guy lock us in?

"Did you plan this?" he hissed, his eyes burning with suspicion. I shook my head, my face betraying no emotion.

"No, of course not," I said. "I swear." Please believe me. I'm telling the truth.

We heard footsteps approaching. A spear clanked against the door, then we heard a knock.

Dr. Fervin Hardasind shouted, "Open the door now!"  He was obviously waiting for the Spanish soldier.

The soldier leaned against the door, clutching his spear.  He said, "I'm sorry, Dr. Hardasind. I won't open the door and leave your Korean friends here."

What the fuck? This whole situation was a nightmare. I couldn't leave Jong Se-hyung here, but what if I went out and he died?

Then, Dr. Hardasind shouted, "All of you, fired!"

The Spanish soldier laughed. "You're no longer in charge, Dr. Hardasind. I am now."

I was about to confront him, but then... I heard a growl.  The sound sent shivers down my spine. A zombie lumbered past us.

Dr. Hardasind caught my eye, his face etched with a plea, "Please don't move." I nodded, my breath catching in my throat.

"What the hell are you doing?"  Jong Se-hyung whispered, emerging from under the desk.

Dr. Hardasind looked at us. "What are you two doing here?"

Jong Se-hyung responded calmly, "I came to find my friends. This is what I found." He gestured at the blood-soaked lab. Dr. Hardasind nodded.

"I came here to check on my friends," I started, but I trailed off.

"Said like what?" Dr. Hardasind asked, approaching us with his spear.

"My friends turned into zombies," I replied. He nodded again.

"That means someone experimented on our friends and turned them into zombies," Jong Se-hyung declared, his anger simmering beneath the surface. He walked towards Dr. Hardasind, his face fierce.

He grabbed Dr. Hardasind by the collar. "Just let me explain," Dr. Hardasind pleaded. Jong Se-hyung released him, snatching the spear from his hand.

"Speak up now!"  Jong Se-hyung's voice was a low growl, laced with a chilling threat. Dr. Hardasind trembled, his eyes wide with fear. I quickly pulled Jong Se-hyung away.

"Why did you stop me? What if he puts us in harm's way like he did to our friends?" Jong Se-hyung snapped, his face dark. I was speechless, my mind reeling.

He strode back to Dr. Hardasind and pulled something from his pocket. My heart leaped into my throat. It was a gun. Just as I started to speak, he cut me off.

"Shut up, Mon Jang-shin. And don't stop me from doing this. Do you understand?" He glared at me. I nodded, my fear mounting.

Dr. Hardasind said, "Please don't kill me... I'll tell you everything you need to know."

Jong Se-hyung turned to me, his eyes blazing with fury. "What? Are you not going to talk right now, huh? Mon Jang-shin!!!"  Seriously, Jong Se-hyung. After you shut me up, now you want me to talk? I don't understand you!

Dr. Hardasind interjected, "You shut her up, remember." He bit his lip, his face pale.  His right hand clamped around Dr. Hardasind's collar, his left hand holding the gun pointed at Dr. Hardasind's temple.

"Where did you take my sister? Min Cha-young," he demanded, the gun clicking as a warning. If Dr. Hardasind didn't tell, he'd be dead.

Dr. Hardasind, his voice trembling, said, "Okay, okay, okay.  At the Laboratory… Room." He released his grip on Dr. Hardasind and shifted the gun to his right hand.

"Start walking now," he commanded. Dr. Hardasind, his face etched with fear, started to move.

his footsteps heavy and hesitant.

Jong Sen-hyung followed close behind, his gun trained on Dr. Hardasind's back.

I stood there, frozen, my mind reeling.  The world had become a twisted nightmare, and I was caught in the middle, desperately trying to find a way to survive, to protect the people I loved.

As we disappeared down the hallway, the silence in the lab was deafening. We could hear the echoes of  our footsteps, the click of the gun, and the low growl of the zombie that had passed by us.
