A/N: Right now I am on a role with my writing, so we are going to get through some parts pretty quickly. Sorry if these first two chapters are short. I just have to get through some introductions and things like that.
I high five Veronica in the hall and smile at her. I walk to science class. The teachers never put us in the same classes. Except for the home room. Because that makes it easier for parties. Veronica and I usually just end up switching classes with each other. It's just easier for everyone that way. I sit down in science class, excitement bubbling in my stomach. It's my birthday today, and I'm so excited. Turning 9 is a big deal. It means that I am just that much closer to becoming double digits. Which means that life will become that much more exciting. The teachers start taking attendance and I say here when my name is called. She tells us that we are going to be talking about photosynthesis today so we need to take out our notebooks. I smile, getting my notebook out quickly. I love science. I love everything about it. It's just so interesting. Like, it explains our entire life. Our entire existence. It's so cool. We start taking notes and I am completely focused on the lesson. I have to sneeze and I turn, looking out the window. I sneeze and I look back up. That's when I see it. Someone was staring at me through the window. I can't tell who it is. Once the person realizes that I'm looking at them they turn away, running away from the window. I get uneasy and turn back to the lesson, trying to stay focused on the lesson. The class ends and I get up, walking over to the teacher. Her name is Mrs. Worth. She is my favorite teacher, and we are very close. She smiles at me then starts frowning, seeing the unease on my face.
"Hey Hailey. Are you ok? You look a little pale." I shake my head, looking down. She grabs my hand and leads me to a seat. I sit down and she crouches in front of me. Someone walks into the room and she stands up, telling them to wait a second then closing the door. She comes back over and crouches in front of me.
"What's wrong Hailey? You can tell me." I look at her, trying to breathe normally.
"Well, during the lesson I had to sneeze so I looked over to the window. After I sneezed I saw someone staring at me through the window. I couldn't tell who it was. Once the person realized that I was looking at them then they walked away. I got scared. I didn't know who it was." She looks at me sympathetically, trying to hide the unease on her face.
"Well, thank you for telling me. I will tell Mrs. Campbell. For now, let's just get you to your next class." I start hyperventilating and she quickly stands up, running to her desk. She grabs a brown paper bag and comes back to me. I start breathing into it and calm down.
"You know what? Let's just bring you to the office. You can tell Mrs. Campbell yourself. Let's go." She grabs my hand, pulling me up. I continue to breathe into the brown paper bag as we walk out of the classroom. She turns towards her students, smiling.
"You guys head into the classroom. I will be right back. I just have to bring Hailey to the office real quick." They quickly walk into the classroom, giving me scared looks as they walk by. We get to the office and she walks me straight to Mrs. Campbell's office. Mrs. Campbell is our principal, and she is the kindest person ever. She quickly stands up and walks over, bringing me over to her desk.
"Thank you for bringing her here Mrs. Worth. I can take it from here." Mrs. Worth smiles at me and leaves, getting back to her classroom. I sit down in a chair, still breathing into a bag. Mrs. Campbell gets on the phone, calling the teacher to my next class. She tells him that I will be late to his class then hangs up the phone. She looks at me, smiling with concern.
"What's wrong Hailey? What happened?" I start breathing heavily again but force myself to calm down. I manage to stutter a few words.
"I n-need V-V-Veronica p-p-please." She nods, turning back to her phone and calling her. We sit in silence for a few seconds before the door opens. I turn and see that Veronica has walked in. I burst into tears and she quickly runs over, sitting beside me.
"What's wrong Hay? What happened?" I grab her hand, calming down slightly. I turn to Mrs. Campbell, breathing deeply.
"I was in Science class when I needed to sneeze. I turned to look out of the window. I sneezed then looked back at the window. I saw someone standing outside the window staring at me. Once the person realized that I was looking at them they ran away. I'm so scared. I don't know who they were." Mrs. Campbell looks concerned and grabs her phone, calling someone else. I turn back to Veronica, still crying. She pulls me into a hug and whispers into my ear that it's gonna be ok. After a couple of seconds Mrs. Campbell started talking to us again. I turn back to her, listening intently.
"I just called the police. They are aware of the situation. They are gonna come and check things out. And they are going to watch the school the rest of the day. But I'm sure that everything will be fine. Maybe it was just a janitor or something. But just to be safe, we have people outside. Now I am going to give you girls a couple of seconds alone, then I am going to send you guys back to class." We smile and nod. Mrs. Campbell gets up and walks out of the room. I turn to Veronica, still breathing deeply. She pulls me to the ground and we sit together like we usually do. She grabs my hands, smiling at me.
"Nica, I'm scared. I don't want to go back. What if something bad happens?" Veronica smiles at me, squeezing my hands.
"Hay, I'm sure that everything will be fine. It's like Mrs. Campbell said. It could have just been someone from the staff, and maybe you just didn't recognize them. So let's just calm down and go back to class." I nod, calming down. Mrs. Campbell walks back in and smiles at us.
"Are you two girls ready to go back to class?" We both nod, smiling. She holds the door open and Veronica and I walk out. I left my bag in Mrs. Worth's room, but I'm sure she had someone run it over to my next class. We arrive outside of my next class. It's history. Nica's next class is math. She stops, pulling me into a hug.
"Everything is going to be ok. I promise Hay. Now have fun in history." I pull back, smiling at her. I wave goodbye as I walk into the classroom. Mr. Jackson, my history teacher, smiles at me. I smile back, heading towards my seat. Mrs. Worth did bring my stuff to me. I sit down, smiling. We are taking notes on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. I take out my notebook, taking notes. The class ends and I pack up my stuff, walking out of the classroom. I run into Veronica, who is sobbing. I bring her to the bathroom and try to figure out what's wrong.
