"Honey, calm down!" Achilles laughed.

"But I'm so excited!" Ada squealed, clinging to Achilles like wannabe ghetto girls I'd see long boarding in the suburbs to fake eyelashes. "I wonder what she looks like, she'll act like— maybe she likes Bridgeton too and we can fangirl together!"

The next morning, the insanely attractive Christakos family assembled at a grand door for their arrival. One that required everyone, even maids and guards, to dress like a wedding was occurring. Boys sported suits and ties, while woman angelic dresses and jewelry. My maids this morning made me wear more than I had my entire life.

Whose arrival were we waiting for?

Xerxes and Slavic Long Legs.

"Yes we are," Polly responded then looking at her kids. "Remember how I raised you all. I expect good behavior for the most important soulmate welcoming. For Xerxes."

"I predict she'll be the most beautiful of all!" Damen chimed in. "Like each vines cascading down our villa!"

"Leaves from the vine!" Eros proclaimed.

"I'm so happy I'm going to explode!" Felipe exclaimed, hopping on the ground on all fours near Calix.

Calix smiled at me, and I smiled back.

"We'll see how he'll treat her," Basil muttered.

Achilles turned to him. "Hopefully love will aid him in coming back to us," he said. "Not just physically."

Huh?

"EEK!" Ada squealed.

As the grand doors swung open, the Christakos family gasped, and the staff all around me straightened their backs as they revealed themselves with locked arms. Straight-faced Xerxes wore a tailored suit, his long blonde wisps perfectly styled, and Maria's was straightened. Slavic Long Legs wore a red bodycon dress with a left leg slit.

Maybe if they devil's tangoed before this, she'd be red, white, and blue.

Achilles's mouth parted. Ada put a hand over her mouth, glossy eyes shining of glee, and even Basil raised his eyebrows. Calix gave me a quick glance when he looked at her then back to her again. Eros gasped. Felipe gazed upon her like a bathroom bitch to her Blue Razzledazzle Juul Pod.

"She is more beautiful than the vines," Damen whispered.

Xerxes didn't look at me, but I made sure to grin cheerfully when Maria did and immediately looked straight ahead.

Finally, they stopped in front of the family.

"Everyone, this is Maria," Xerxes stated, his eyes gesturing to the lady in his arm.

"Xerxes." Polly walked over to him, her eyes like a doe's. Then she turned to Maria. Her lips quivered as she whispers, "You are beautiful, my darling."

Maria nodded with a smile. I knew underneath her skin layers it was a Barbie Movie Villan smile— like the gold-digging rat mom in that one with the weird island girl who got shipwrecked, trying not to look at me. Or like that My Little Pony episode where Twilight Sparkle's brother Shining Armor was getting married to her old babysitter Princess Cadence but she was locked in a dungeon and a changeling with Swiss Cheese legs took her place. She was the changeling with Swiss Cheese legs.

I could go all day.

Polly turned to Xerxes. "I never thought this day would come," she said.

He exhaled. "I didn't, either. But I have Maria now, so the worry has vanished."

She wrapped Xerxes in her arms, and he took the embrace with light arms. Everyone in the room seemed to simultaneously melt from the gesture from frozen stances to gleaming eyes. I thought the moment sweet if Maria wasn't next to them looking like someone then pissed in her bathtub this morning.

"Do you say those words to each other?" Polly asked with her head on his shoulder.

Xerxes's rumble of a voice was quiet. "Yes."

"Good," she whispered. "Those words are only for you two privately."

"So, we have an announcement!"

It came from the depths of Slavic Long Leg's throat enthusiastically like she suddenly snorted a spike of dopamine.

Xerxes and Polly pulled away from each other and everyone in the room seemed to lean in at that second.

"We're engaged!" she sang out.

Every Christakos shouted out and ran to them in euphoria, crying out joyous Greek. The staff began cheering all around as if wedding bells already rang out, white flower petals streamed from the ceiling, and every decoration celebrated union.

Meaningful Union.

Right Union.

Born Union.

One I watched from the sidelines, and one I'll never get to have.
