"Dr Tricia, your favourite patient is here again." Tricia literally just entered the on-call room before she got paged.
"Coming, thanks." Tricia stuffed her phone into her coat pocket before heading back to the ER.
"Please tell me Dr Tricia isn't on duty today? I promised not to be back for at least 2 weeks..." A man was pleading with the nurse in charge.
"Sorry Detective, but lady luck isn't on your side today." The nurse chuckled as both of them heard the familiar footsteps coming their way.
"Detective Garcia, what a pleasant surprise..." Tricia drew the curtains to expose the embarrassed man sitting on the bed with a gash on his upper arm.
"Good evening, Dr Tricia..." The detective gave Tricia an awkward smile.
"You mean good morning? It's 2am in the morning, Detective Garcia." Tricia narrowed her eyes as she put on her gloves.
"Right. It's nothing big this time though, I promise! Just a teeny tiny cut here..." The detective downplayed his injury.
"Joshua here decided to play hero again and stop a knife-wielding man with his bare arms." The detective's partner tattled on him.
"Sir! I mean...he was about to slash the kid, I didn't have time to think." Joshua defended his decision. Not that he was proud of it.
"True, what kind of crazy father would threaten to slash his own kid in the wee hours of the morning." The senior detective sighed.
"How's the child doing, sir?" Joshua had came in with the shaken child but she had been taken somewhere else.
"You can leave him with me, Detective Daniel. The child should be the paediatricians over at the other end." Tricia smiled at the older detective and bowed slightly as he took his leave.
"Ouch..." Joshua let out a tiny yelp as the antiseptic solution touched the gash.
"Bear with it." Tricia instructed.
"Are you angry...?" Joshua studied Tricia's face as she leaned in to dress the wound.
"It's not that deep so there's no need for stitches. Count yourself lucky." Tricia ignored the question.
"Sorry...I know I promised you to stay clear of the ER for 2 weeks..." Joshua tilted his head so he could see Tricia's face.
"It's been 5 days, Detective." Tricia retorted.
"I know but hey, at least it was longer than my previous record?" Joshua smiled.
"Yeah, but in exchange for a more serious injury." Tricia wasn't convinced.
"I'll treat you to coffee after this?" Joshua wanted to make a peace offering.
"Don't you have to get back to the station?" Tricia wondered out loud.
"Well, I do have to stay with the child until social services come. Plus, I'm injured so Sir will close an eye." Joshua awaited Tricia's reply.
"Don't move. The faster I finish, the earlier you get your coffee." Tricia agreed without looking at Joshua.
"I'll wait for you at the rooftop." Joshua grinned as Tricia gently applied the waterproof bandage on his arm.
"I need an extra shot of expresso tonight." Tricia called out before leaving.
"I got you, Doc." Joshua hoped off the bed and headed for the coffeeshop.
