kai opened his eyes drowsily to see the light of midday seeping into the room despite the curtains being drawn. with a quiet groan, he sat up and rubbed his eyes tiredly.

y/n had gotten out of the shower only minutes ago, the door of the large bathroom now opened to let the steam out. kai could see his boyfriend only half dressed as he dried his hair with a towel. a smile curved on his lips at the sight while he gazed at the male lovingly, admiring his features.

after a moment, y/n saw the other through the mirror in front of him. his cheeks instantly went red at kai's line of sight meeting his own. he set his damp towel aside and took his shirt from it's hanger, draping the fabric over his torso before walking over to their bed.

"i didn't know you were awake," y/n said bashfully. "how was your nap?"

"really good. this bed is so comfy."

y/n grinned at the answer as he now sat with the other and gave him a kiss. kai felt him pull away and stand back up, trying to hide his smile and blushing face.

"you alright?" kai asked.

"mm? oh, yes sorry. i just didn't know you were watching me.. i feel all flustered now." y/n responded. kai chuckled and grabbed the shorter's hand to pull him back onto the bed.

"if it makes you feel any better, i literally just woke up and was only watching you for a second before you saw me." he assured. y/n nodded at this and settled into the bed beside him, feeling the male's arm drape around his side and his lips press lightly against his temple.

y/n sighed at the blissful feeling of just himself with kai next to him. no feeling could relate at all. kai's sights remained on y/n, his smile falling slightly with the realization that his eyes seemed a little dark. the same tired look he'd noticed recently still lingered and only made him more worried.

"love?" kai's soft voice broke the silence around them.

"hm?"

"are you sleeping enough?" he inquired. y/n looked at him a bit confused.

"yes, for the most part.. why?"

kai's lips formed into a line before answering.

"honestly, i'm a little worried about you," he admitted. "i don't want to be annoying or overprotective, but you've just seemed really tired over the past couple weeks and your eyes seem a little dark. are you sure you're alright?"

y/n took a deep breath at the other's words before sitting up, kai following.

"i dunno.. things have been more difficult lately."

kai frowned at the response and began drawing circles on y/n's back with his hand.

"difficult?"

"yeah.. i didn't wanna tell you because so many things have been going on lately, especially with your comeback and everything.. but i've been getting more hate recently. i'm not really sure why all of a sudden it's getting so bad."

kai felt a stab to his heart. he didn't understand how anyone could hate him at all.

"y/n, you should've told me.. is that why you've been working more lately? trying to win people over?"

y/n nodded, feeling his throat close up a little with the small urge to cry.

"if people hate me just for dating someone.. i dunno. i just don't want them to. and i get kinda scared sometimes that it'll affect things with us."

kai quickly moved on the bed to sit in front of y/n, taking his hands securely and bringing them to his lips to shower them with small kisses. the other couldn't help but smile at the loving gesture.

"baby, listen to me," kai began, now setting their hands back down between them and looking at him directly. "something like that is never going to pull us apart. remember when i told you two years ago that i'd much rather have everyone hate me than be without you? that still stands. you're the most precious soul i've ever met. no relationship i've had with anyone, platonic or romantic, has been filled with this much love and support. you're like.. my safe place. i'm so in love with you."

y/n's heart ached at kai's sincere tone and caring eyes. he brushed away the couple tears that had managed to escape his eyes as he nodded.

"when we get back we should talk to our managers about the hate, okay? we'll take things one step at a time and get through it together, just like we always do." kai assured as he squeezed y/n's hands.

"okay, hyuka. thank you." y/n said softly. the taller grinned and shook his head.

"no need to thank me.. now c'mon, let's go get some lunch like we planned?"

y/n smiled and perked up a bit at the mention of food. the two got up from their bed, grabbing their coats and heading out hand in hand.
