I watched as Samael had a chain wrapped around the child neck, "Knife! Now!" Samael said to me, I grabbed the knife and stabbed the child in the chest, I closed my eyes as I did so.

But then the child grabbed the knife and repeatedly kept stabbing itself.

"Enough!" The girl yelled, the knife fell to the ground, "I-I'm sorry." I heard the child say as he fell into her arms.

"It's not your fault...it's not...your fault." The girl continued as she was sobbing. I locked eyes with Samael and I sighed, I hated having to see them go through this.

──

"They're called 'the infected' for a reason. Once scarred by a murk, it's over. People turn violent craving human meat. They start to lose themselves. The kid was a special case. Clouded by grief and anger, it's possessed him, granting him powers to prey on anything to get stronger. There's nothing we could've done to save him." Samael explained.

I wiped my previous tears away as I felt a shiver run down my spine when I felt as though something or someone was looking over my shoulder.

I turned around to see...nothing. But what was that feeling? Why'd it feel so..I don't know how to explain it. But I know something was there.

"What the hell is a murk? Why...Why are they doing this to us?" She asked, "What did we do to deserve this?"

"Wipe your face off. It's disgusting." Samael said, I chuckled.

"It's a miracle you made it through that. Most people would've died without trying." I added, "I would've been dead if it weren't for you two." The girl said.

"How did you both find me?" She asked, "The screams weren't exactly quiet. Anyways...here. This is for you." Samael said and handed her an item.

"Rayne liebert?" Woo, now I knew her name!

"T...That's me...Where did you find this?" Rayne asked, "oh! Orge found it at the foot of the bed you were sleeping at. You probably dropped it before you left." I explained.

"Did you look for me to give you this?" Rayne said, "Don't get the wrong idea! It wasn't my original plan—" but Samael was cut off.

"Thank you Samael, (Y/n)." Rayne said, "And thank you too, Orge."

Orge hissed at her and she removed her hand that was petting him, "Okay, okay! There's no next time, I promise!" Rayne exclaimed.

"Also...I'd like to apologize." Rayne said, "For what?" I asked.

"I wasn't in my right mind for leaving without a word. I should've told you why I did it but..." Rayne trailed off.

"Why did you leave?" Samael asked, "You didn't really specify in the letter."

"Letter? what letter?" Rayne asked, "What other letter do you think I'm talking about?" Samael answered.

She didn't say anything else and there was silence, "Y'know what? It doesn't really matter. It's none of my business. After all, it's your choice. But are you sure about that? There's really nothing much left in this city but those things." Samael explained, he handed her his jacket.

"You're still offering me that ride?" Rayne asked, "Yeah, why wouldn't we?" I answered.

"You've got a minute before we hit the road." Samael said, referring to me and him.

"Then that's fine. I'll come too. But first, I'd like to make a deal with you both." Rayne said, "What deal?" Samael asked.

"I want to join you two." Rayne answered, "Join us? Why?" Samael questioned.

"To repay for all the times you two saved me. If you let me join you both, I vow to protect you and (Y/n), including orge even if it means risking my life." Rayne said, I looked at her and then me and Samael looked at each other.

"W-What's that supposed to mean?" She asked, "Risk your life to protect us? You can barely protect yourself. What makes you think I'd believe a word you say?" Samael said.

"Because I've got nothing to lose. Let me help you both. Of course, you have the right to call it off anytime you want." Rayne continued, "you realize how crazy you sound, right?" Samael said.

"I'm being 100% serious. Do we have a deal?" Rayne asked, holding her hand out, Samael slapped her hand away, "Fine, whatever." He said.

I gave her a polite smile, "Thanks, Rayne." She smiled back gratefully.

"C'mon orge." I said, orge ran over to me, I still felt that unknown presence lurking behind me.

Whatever it was, it didn't feel nice.
