Arsonist's Lullaby
"Oh...oh my god"
The sound of fingers tapping filled the halls, it was Thing filling out Enid's orders of notifying her friends to attend Wednesday's birthday party, his orders were to tell Xavier and Luke.
So Thing scuttled up to Xavier's door and tapped on it, it was a while before Xavier opened, holding a large bag of ice to his incredibly bruised face.
"Fing?" He was barely able to say due to losing a few teeth.
Thing hurried in and explained to Xavier to meet in Crackstone's crypt and to also bake a cake, Thing had a lot of important business to do, along with tell Luke, so he was quick with his explanation, he was walking out almost as fast as he walked in.
"Wait!" Xavier stopped him. "Where you going now?"
Thing quickly explained that he was off to tell Luke what he told him, and an idea popped into Xavier's head.
"Don't worry about Luke, I'll tell him" Xavier assured as Thing thanked him and hurried off.
It was early in the morning when Luke heard a sharp and angry knock at the door, he assumed it was Wednesday and went to open it, only to be met with Enid angrily tapping her foot.
"Where were you?!" She angrily asked.
"Uh...what?" Luke asked back confused.
"I thought the instructions were clear, meet at Crackstone's crypt and surprise Wednesday, you were the only person she would actually want to see so for you not to show up is a real...dick move" Enid complained.
"I...have no idea what your talking about" Luke said, genuinely unsure of what was happening.
"It was her birthday as well, I cant believe you, you didn't even bother to get her a present" She started to say quickly, the angriest she'd ever been in a while.
"If-" Luke went to say but was cut off.
"NO!...just...goodbye Luke" She said as she walked off, slamming the door behind her, Luke showed emotion for the first time in a bit, pure confusion. Luke turned around to see Leighton sitting on his chair.
"Don't look at me" He said blankly.
Wednesday stood in front of the ashes that spelt out the message both she and half the school had seen, she was so transfixed on the message she didn't hear Luke walking up behind her.
"Apologies for missing your party" He started, before reaching into his jacket and pulling out a box, covered in black and gold wrapping paper. "Even if I wasn't told"
Luke gave the present to Wednesday, who held it in her hand for a while before deciding to ask the question that's been on her mind since the burning message was first seen.
"Did you do this?" She asked, she didn't want to, she wanted to have faith he wouldn't be involved, but fire was Luke's 'special interest'.
"No, the fires I start are normally less controllable, and I never quite mastered this near perfect placement of gasoline." He admired the straight lines of ashes from the fire.
"Thank you...for the gift" Wednesday thanked, not looking at him.
"You haven't even opened it yet" Luke slightly smiled, Wednesday wasn't used to that, but it was a welcome surprise.
