Arsonist's Lullaby

"And did you...like those feelings?"

The moon shone over the two teenagers, Luke wiping the distressed tear from his eye as he stared back into the fire.

"What do you mean by right?" Wednesday asked as Luke regained his composure.

"I remember it like it was yesterday"

The crickets chirped at the dead of night, some 10 years ago, a young boy laid in his bed, a short walk away from his parents bedroom. But it wasn't close enough as they couldn't hear his soft cries as he tossed back and forth.

His eyes were practically wired shut, you wouldn't be able to tell if it was a nightmare of a figure had appeared in his room that only he could see, but something was wrong. The lights were off baring a small bedside lamp that illuminated half of the boys old room, the jackets hung on the chairs looking like criminals sentenced to death row.

The boys eyes shot open, bloodshot and raw as he stood up from his bed, keeping his head down to avoid looking up at the casted shadows. The boy opened his white bedroom door to be met with a long straight hallway, with brown wooden walls and a red carpet.

The boy had memorised all the floorboards that creaked as he delicately trod over them, still not daring to look back in case a looming figure stalked him. He got to the stairs which he slowly crept down with less grace, being barely tall enough to hold onto the oak wood railings.

He finally reached the bottom and quickly rushed into the large living room, a large TV mounted on the wall, underneath it placed a grand fireplace filled with slightly charred logs.

The boy stepped closer, grabbing a match from a nearby cabinet and he lit it, staring into the flame as it momentarily lit his face, before casting it into the unlit fireplace.

The fireplace sparked to life, the boy sat on a chair opposite to the fireplace that was too tall for him, leaving his feat dangling as he could only stare.

The boy was Luke, in his parents grand and rich house, he was an easily stressed boy, getting overwhelmed easily, even the thought that his parents would catch him awake at 2am was enough to give him a light stomach ache.

Fire was the only thing that calmed him down, he wasn't sure why and neither were his parents, perhaps he liked it because it gave him some semblance of control over something, being able to extinguish it whenever he wanted.

Suddenly a harsh whack sounded against the window, it was storming outside and a tree missing leaves had bashed itself against the window, however it didn't stop.

As lightning struck, it was clear to the boy that no amount of fire would rest his frantic head as he curled up into a ball and pressed his hands to his ears. But that didn't work either.

A burning sensation crept through the boys veins like lava and he yelled in a pain, though his parents couldn't save him, the fire couldn't save him, not even God could save him.

It took the fireman 2 and a half hours to find Luke's body, burning and full of emotion.

It took the fireman 2 and a half days to find his parents, cold and lifeless.

"And ever since that day...I've been haunted with nightmares" Luke explained as Wednesday stared in silence, she was truly stumped as how she should feel. "I want to apologize"
