Chapter 29

SpottedClaw's POV

Yowls and howls filled the air. SpottedClaw woke up from her dreams and padded outside to see what the commotion was about. When she padded into the clearing she couldn't believe her eyes. WhiteStar was dead! Who killed him or what killed him?

"SunCloud! Do you know what caused his death?" WillowTail, NaturePack's deputy now leader, wailed.

"No there is no evidence to what killed him. No scent or anything. I'm sorry." SunCloud dipped her head and her eyes clouded with guilt.

"It's not your fault SunCloud. But whatever did kill WhiteStar will get revenge somehow." SpottedClaw comforted the orange furred dog.

"Well I guess I should elect a new deputy since I'm now leader of NaturePack." WillowTail sniffled. She jumped onto the Great Rock and called out to the Pack dogs.

"Let all those old and young enough to catch their own prey, come here beneath the Great Rock!" Mostly every dog was out in the clearing mourning WhiteStar, so they just had to pad a few steps further right. "It has been a rough morning today since something killed WhiteStar." Some dogs howled. WillowTail continued when everyone was quiet. "Now since WhiteStar is dead I, WillowTail, am now NaturePack's leader, WillowStar and I hope StarPack approve of me. I will start the journey to Lowstones tomorrow to get my seven lives with a few warriors and SunCloud. Now onto selecting a new deputy for our Pack." WillowStar looked around and looked right into SpottedClaw's eyes. "SpottedClaw can you come up here please?"

SpottedClaw leapt onto the Great Rock and her eyes sparkled. She was so proud, but also sad since WillowStar was deputy when WhiteStar was alive. "I, WillowStar, pronounce SpottedClaw of NaturePack, NaturePack's deputy until I join the ranks of StarPack." WillowStar touched noses with SpottedClaw and everyone yowled with delight.

All the dogs gathered around WhiteStar's body to hold a vigil. They all said their goodbyes and LarchWing, DapplePool and GoldFeather went to go bury him.

SpottedClaw noticed that the only dog that wasn't around was BlazeHeart. She went to search for him when no one was looking. She checked the warriors den, the medicine den, the apprentices den, and the leaders den. No sign of him anywhere! Then, she heard rustling in a nearby bush and a dog she didn't recognize jumped onto her and clawed at her face.

SpottedClaw didn't know what was happening until more of these unknown dogs, FirePack, appeared. It was an ambush! Someone must have told FirePack that WhiteStar was dead. SpottedClaw struggled from this dog's grip and looked into his eyes. He looks really familiar.. He is the one who killed ShadowClaw!, SpottedClaw thought. She growled and clawed his nose and when he was distracted she got behind him and pinned him to the ground.

"This is what happens when you mess with our Pack." SpottedClaw spat at the dog. She clawed his belly digging deep, but not fatal and clamped her teeth into his neck, but also in his skin so it wasn't fatal. He would be dead before he gets to FirePack territory with all his bleeding.

"Oh SpottedClaw, right?" He grinned. "I remember the look on your face when I killed ShadowClaw, it was delightful to see. I hope your friends have the same face when I kill you!" He lunged at her even with all his bleeding.

SpottedClaw was pinned, but not for long. He was trying to snap at her neck, but she kicked his face with her hind-legs. She pounced on him and raked her claws over his face and back. He was bleeding more than before. He started getting weaker and weaker, but he still didn't leave.

"You're going to die if you keep this up whoever you are." SpottedClaw growled. He didn't care, because he kept fighting.

"I, SteamStorm, cannot die! You shall be the one to die!" He lunged at SpottedClaw again, but he stopped mid-air and fell against the hard earthy floor. His breath became shallow and ragged. "Wait till our second leader hears about you killing his deputy!" And with that SteamStorm twitched and lay still amongst the battling.

SpottedClaw backed away and felt two familiar pelts brush against hers. She was next to LarchWing and ShadowClaw, his spirit. She felt like nothing could get in her way. She tackled another FirePack dog with LarchWing and ShadowClaw helping and she retreated. They did that until mostly all the FirePack dogs were gone.

SpottedClaw heard a piercing howl coming from the clearing. She touched her nose to LarchWing's in thanks and gratitude and padded into the clearing.
