Ayato awoke early in the morning and prepared for his speech. As he got ready he kept a blank emotionless face. For the whole morning he did not speak or show any sign of emotion. Ayaka was very concerned but decided to not question him about it.
Once they were ready they made their way into the city. A large crowd had already gathered and awaited the announcement. All of the candidates had already arrived as well so there was nothing stopping them now.
"Good luck Ayato, remember to choose wisely" Ayaka said.
Ayato didn't respond, didn't even look back to face her.
"Good morning city of Inazuma, today is the day I officially announce who I choose as my wife. The wedding has already been prepared, it will take place in 2 days" Ayato announced, "these past few weeks have been-"
As Ayato gave his speech, he spotted Thoma standing in the crowd. He quickly turned away and continued knowing if he stared any longer he would breakdown.
"These past few weeks have been wonderful" He continued, "getting to know all these lovely ladies has been a big pleasure, and after some careful consideration, I have come to a conclusion."
He glanced over to all the candidates, they awaited all looking nervous. Ayato looked back and sighed.
"The person I choose to marry, is none other than, Kujou Sara of the Tenryou Commission" Ayato announced.
The crowd cheered, Kujou Sara looked up in shock and made her way up onto the stage.
"Now let me do this officially" Ayato stated.
He knelt down on one knee, he stared at the floor for a moment trying his best to contain his emotion.
"Kujou Sara, will you do me the honor and marry me?" Ayato asked.
"Yes of course!" Kujou Sara said happily.
Ayato stood back up and hesitated for a moment, he wasn't sure what to do. He ended up awkwardly hugging Kujou Sara.
Everyone was happily cheering, everyone but Thoma.
"As I said before, the wedding will take place in two days, all are invited. Thank you everyone" Ayato announced.
Ayato began to speak with Kujou Sara. As he did, Thoma snuck behind Ayaka.
"Ayaka?" Thoma said.
"Oh my, you scared me. Thoma? Where have you been?" She asked.
"It's a long story but I've come here to tell you that I have decided I'm moving back to Mondstadt" Thoma said.
"What? Why?" Ayaka questioned.
"Like I said, it's a long story, I just think it would be for the best. Please tell this news to Ayato for me. Tomorrow I will begin packing and the next day I leave" Thoma responded.
"I think I understand, I will pass on the news" Ayaka said, "but Thoma, just so you know there is still time. Take this, just in case"
Ayaka handed Thoma a flyer giving out details listing where the wedding would be.
"Take care Thoma, I will miss you" She said.
"Thank you, I'll miss you to" He replied.
The rest of the day was spent celebrating, but no matter how much he partied, Ayato couldn't feel happy. He continued to keep a happy facade throughout the day until he returned home. As soon as he did return he went straight to bed. Tomorrow was filled with last minute planning.
The next day went by like a blur for Ayato. He woke up early and began his last minute planning with Kujou Sara, but throughout the entire day he never felt like he was truly there. His mind was in a different place, as if his body was on autopilot.
Meanwhile Thoma began to pack up all of his belongings to get ready for his trip home. He got the earliest ride home he could get, it just wasn't early enough. As he packed he cried to himself, it hurt to leave but he knew that staying would hurt more. Ayaka's words began to float around in his head, but he ignored it. Besides what is there left to do.
"Well Ayato, tomorrow is the day. I couldn't be more honored to be your wife" Kujou Sara said.
They had finally finished their planning and were returning home.
"This is the last time we return home to different houses" She said.
"Yes it's crazy to think about. Remember to get plenty of rest, you'll need all day to prepare" He replied.
"Of course. Goodnight, tomorrow shall be perfect" She said.
Ayato continued walking home, the entire time he felt nothing but sorrow. Once he returned he saw Ayaka waiting for him.
"There you are, I was supposed to tell you this earlier but you had been so busy I decided to wait" Ayaka said.
"What is it?" Ayato asked.
"Well, Thoma asked me to tell you that he will be moving back to Mondstadt, he leaves tomorrow" She replied.
"Oh, I see" He responded.
He didn't bother to question any further. As he did the previous night, he went straight for his room and prepared for bed.
"You idiot, how could you ever think this could work? All you did was make a fool of yourself, at least you did one thing right and chose a good wife" Ayato said to himself, "this is for the best, having her by your side will make things easier, for the nation."
He layed in bed and stared up into the sky. He spoke one last thing before falling asleep for the night.
"Sacrifices need to be made, this is just another sacrifice. Besides, how bad could it be to trade your happiness for respect?"
And with that he drifted off to sleep, awaiting the next day.
